Today was my buddy Dan Truesdail's birthday, Don Truesdail's pop. Amidst unfortunate circumstances, he and I have become good pals these last couple years. We spent nice time together, Dan, janet (Don's mom) and myself. Dan and I have played some music together. I try to learn from him. This is one of his tunes that I recorded last year at their place in Owego, NY. I learned it today for him for his birthday and here it is. This tune, "The Great Storyteller" was written by Dan about his pop, years ago. I have reverence for the bond Don had with Dan and the bond Dan had with his pop as explained in this song. I love the Truesdails. In my world, they have contributed mightily in a positive way to this planet that we share. Happy Birthday to you. I'm thrilled you had a nice celebration.

"Skyway To Paradise" was a song I wrote in 1995 (about, maybe 1997 actually) my ex-girlfriend Cary, when I reuntied in Paradise, CA. One can reach said Paradise by way of the Paradise Skyway. The reason I picked this tune (mainly) is that it is more like a Dan Truesdail tune than most of my others and he is on my mind because today is his birthday. Also, my stepdad (the daddiest of all my dads these days,) Bobby Brown thinks that "Skyway To Paradise" is my big hit. He believes that if some famous person were to record it it would be a huge h9t worldwide. Maybe so Bobby Brown. I don;t know. It is a song I wrote a long time ago.
I was playing this tune in the high school I substitiute teach at after school had finished today. The janitor, a James Bonds (not joking) walked int he room mid-tune. You can hear him. It made the motion-sensitive lights go on which looks pretty cool. He was a large African-American fellow. I liked him a lot., We didn't talk til the video was done. Then he told me about his son, Jeremiah Bonds, a rapper who plays in Russia. James Bonds is cool and I hope I get to talk to him again someday. I told him I am friends with a rapper named James Deans, the Destructo Bunny. I know James Bonds and James Deans. That blows my mind. What could be more bad-ass than James Bond and James Deans? Only plural of them, more James Bonds and James Deans. Exactly.

This version of "April" was recorded by The Jefferson Jay Band at The Belly Up Tavern on August 19, 2009. That night, The Jefferson Jay Band was Richard Romero on bass, Jack Davidson on guitar, Jose Maldonado on drums and The Soul Man on guiro. This was our opener. Before we played, the house music was "Stairway To Heaven" by Led Zeppelin, probably the most epic tune of all-time. Therefore, I left it in. I think it sets the mood nicely and segues into "April," a song about new beginnings, quite nicely. "April" is also about how experiences, like words, are what you make of them. April? What is that. What is a song? What is love? These things are whatever we invent them tobe for ourselves.
August 19, 2009 is Don Truesdail's mom, Janet's birthday. We are pals. I wished her a "Happy Birthday" from the stage, which can be heard at the end of the track. Also, she expressed interest in more info on the new rage, world class super puppy, Nigel, so I am decided (in her honor) to release the world's first photos of me and Nigel, exclusively at the end of this video clip. "People" (Magazine) offered a million dollars for 'em. I offer them here in stead in the name of the great Janet Truesdail. Hail Truesdail!

in case you didn't notice I'm a big history guy. Probably wouldn't be doing this whole thing otherwise. I've been enjoying the music of a year ago right nowish on the archives lately and today's clip is also from February 4, 2010. It is a tune called "Fabulous Love" that I'd written around then. Her it is performed with Wes Davis on guitar, Richard Romero on bass and The Soul Man on guiro. I am blessed to have great friends. We had another awesome time playing music last night at our gig at Winston's and also afterwards.

I'm not gonna lie. I don't even know what this song is or how it goes. Today was a busy day. Leanne and I went down to the Chinese New Year thing and then to Philly B's folks place to watch the Super Bowl. Forget the fact that upon arriving at the "Chinese thing" downtown, we realized (due to the total lack of Chinese anything) that it was really next week. So, I didn't have much time at all to do my videos today. I didn't even have my guitar. I left it up at Blowski's last night. The result is this piece of music, I'm calling "Chinese Food," something I didn't eat today.
Upon further review, this tune is a collaborative effort of my whole happy family. I just realize I like this video. Hooray!

This afternoon at Winston's Blowski, Soul Man, Richard and I will be joined by Paul Ruiz and Cory and Laura Wilkins as The Jefferson Jay Band returns to Winston's at 6PM. Can you tell I'm excited? I'm also excited about my new puppy Nigel, who appears in some of today's videos. Even though, tons of families wanted to adopt him because he is so unbelievably cute, theoretically he could have been earmarked for for execution as a homeless little pup just days ago. So let's all celebrate that not happening with another rousing rendition of everybody's favorite 21st century contemplative classic, "Killing's Wrong."

Not only did Nigel oblige by being absurdly cute on screen but he even ran away mid-tune, clearly an homage to Phish's subject dog himself, Runaway Jim.

Feeling in a doggy mood, I dug up one of my Angel-inspired tunes that I hadn't 365'd yet. "Rincon and Angel" is the story of Angel as a youth and her frolicking adventures with her best pal at the time, Rincon. I recorded this song for my CD, "Blue; A Kid's Album," which is available at jeffersonjay.bandcamp.com
Parts of "Rincon and Angel" look at life from a dog's perspective and others aim to get inside the mind of such cute pooches, interpreting their motives. The biggest benefit to having a pooch in my opinion is the incredible influx of love in your life and I think this tune makes that point quite well

It's You," was indeed part of 2010's Summer Songburst, a precious and prolific period in my life. Tonight, I will be jamming this tune and other with my friends in preparation for our Jefferson Jay Band show at Winston's in Ocean Beach tomorrow evening at 6PM. It's free. Hope to see you. "Diff'rent Strokes" is actually by Alan Thicke, Gloria Loring and Al Burton. That Alan Thicke, what a talented cat. Maybe I should give him a call. I loved "Diff'rent Strokes," the show as a kid, even after it got horribly preachy and cheesy. Could have lived without the Dudley molestation episode as a kid personally, creeped out by it to this day... but how could you not love Arnold Jackson? Just the other day I found myself reading Gary Coleman's wikipedia. Fascinating. Poor trainwreck little guy. I dedicate this version to Gary. Hope you find some peace the next time around.

Been really digging the vibe of this 2-4-10 show, one year ago today incidentally, so I will be sticking with it through the weekend. Here the crew is playing one of my tunes, a brand new on at the time called "Brand New Mind." I wrote on January 13, 2009, the one year anniversary of my super amigo, Don Truesdail's passing. Paul Ruiz on trumpet, Soul Man on guiro, Richard Romero on bass and Wes Davis on guitar. These guys are all my dear friends and that's why I felt comfortable throwing these (relatively simple) songs at them on stage even though they'd almost certainly never heard them before. Gosh, it's fun, playing music with your friends.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 71 "Touchdown" - co-written with Dr. Bobby Brown

"Touchdown" or "The Meathead's National Anthem" as it is parenthetically titled seems awful appropriate with the Super Bowl just around the corner. Dr. Bobby Brown, my stepdad and my mom came to visit me during the great year of 2008. Shortly before they departed, Bobby busted out the lyrics to the first verse of this tune and I asked if I could do something with that. I sure could. And did. I busted out the rest of this tune pretty quick before tacking on the Simon and Garfunkel's "The Boxer" inspired end to this ditty. I'm not sure if they realized they were saying "lie" and die:" over and over again but I did.
This song is penned about the plight of your average, American, thick-headed, short-sighted selfish jock, otherwise known as Ben Roethlisberger (or for that matter almost anyone from my high school's football team)

Here is another clip of the initial performance of The Ocean Beach Road Show. In yesterday's clip I was playing sitar with some of my nearest and dearest amigos. Today I am playing gu zheng. After my friend Don Truesdail, who was a musical jack of all trades, passed away, I had a calling to pick up many different instruments. This inspiration led me in the direction of the banjo, the drum set and later the sitar and the gu zheng. I'm not gonna lie. craigslist.org helped.
The Ocean Beach Road Show is a great opportunity for me to play different instruments and do different things depending on what is needed in the group fro tune to tune. I am very happy that I can contribute on many instruments at this point in my life. Last night, a bunch of my friends and i had a really fin jam at Blowski's abode. I got to just sing lead and make up some words on some of the jams and that was great. That is where I started from musically and if I'd had my way, perhaps it's all I'd have ver done. It is still howe I'm most comfortable, holding a mic and singing. I wound up playing a little bass later with my sweet lady Leanne throwing down some drums. She has natural talents there. In other news, we may be getting a puppy named Nigel real soon. Peace

So I started with Joy To The World, which yes, I know technically has nothing to do with dogs. I then made my way to the Hendrix tune "Angel" that my sweet flizeppo (that's Angel) was named after. Too hard. So I bent it a little bit and jumped to "Centerfold," a song I've always liked and never played on guitar, because it mentions Angel in the lyrics a couple times. Granted, tis song is talking some schoolgirl who poses in a nudie magazine and I am tam talking about my pooch but... details.
This is nice because it leads to an insidious problem in this world that few people are discussing. Yeah it's not revolt in Egypt, but the omnipresence of incorrect chords on the interent has gone too far and truly, this blight on society must be stopped. Yes, the interent is full of false facts, I belive one could even argue that it's deliberate and the War of Facts is right there with The War and Physics and The War on Nature that quietly followed The War on Drugs right through our world. Enough digression. I looked up Centerfold and IU played it as it was written here.

Well, I played it and I knew it was wrong and you could probably hear it was wrong, but what was I to do... Stop the song, stop the recording, listen to the tune, learn it right, record it right, and publish a correct version to the internet thereby solving 0.000001% of the problem with lying chords on the interent. Of course not. I'm not gonna lie. I don't have time to do that. I don't even have time to do this. Well, if you can't do something about something personally (or are unwilling to), the least you can do is complain about or blame someone else and hope that they maybe get around to doing something about later. This is not George Washington's America, is it? It's not Martin Luther King Jr.'s either. 8 years of George W. Bush and I doubt things will ever be the same. At least we can still dream. I'm pretty sure that's still allowed.

Here is another clip of the initial performance of The Ocean Beach Road Show. In yesterday's clip I was playing sitar with some of my nearest and dearest amigos. Today I am playing gu zheng. After my friend Don Truesdail, who was a musical jack of all trades, passed away, I had a calling to pick up many different instruments. This inspiration led me in the direction of the banjo, the drum set and later the sitar and the gu zheng. I'm not gonna lie. craigslist.org helped.
The Ocean Beach Road Show is a great opportunity for me to play different instruments and do different things depending on what is needed in the group fro tune to tune. I am very happy that I can contribute on many instruments at this point in my life. Last night, a bunch of my friends and i had a really fin jam at Blowski's abode. I got to just sing lead and make up some words on some of the jams and that was great. That is where I started from musically and if I'd had my way, perhaps it's all I'd have ver done. It is still howe I'm most comfortable, holding a mic and singing. I wound up playing a little bass later with my sweet lady Leanne throwing down some drums. She has natural talents there. In other news, we may be getting a puppy named Nigel real soon. Peace

I don't know if this is a record or anything, but this song only took me three minutes to write, the three minutes (exactly) that I spent recording the tune. I guess I was inspired. I'd tell you what the song's about, but I think it lays it out real clear. Well, I think we're getting a puppy named Nigel and this is the first song he's inspired so far. Pictures forthcoming. I hit record and put ut out there and this is what you see. "Oh Nigel, we're gonna make it on through the night." - my new song.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 69 Ocean Beach Road Show Pt. 1 - 2-28-10

Welcome to the 69th day of Operation 365. What better way to celebrate than with Wes Davis. It doesn't seem like a year ago, but it almost was. happy February everyone. hThis clip was filmed at the initial offering of The Ocean Beach Road Show on February 28, 2010. Here we have Wes Davis on guitar, Paul Ruiz on trumpet, Jefferson Jay (me) on sitar, Blowski on keyboards, and Ricardo Gutierrez on percussion. The Ocean Beach Road Show was conceived as a collaborative community concept people can contrubite to something greater in breadth than what the artists might do individually otherwise. This year, The Ocean Beach Road Show will continue to pick up steam as we take outs how to the road. Wes and I, representing The Road Show are currently planning an acoustic tour for early April and that is coming along quite nicely. We will be in Blue Lake, April 5, Sacramento on April 7 and San Francisco on April 9. Much more news to come. Enjoy the Ocean Beach Road Show here as it was born. Wes Davis is awesome. He is a dear freiend of me and always cracks me up when I need or want to laugh, which is often. We played a gig together in Julian a couple of nights ago and that was fun and I am beginning to get really excited for our tour with The Ocean Beach Road Show in April. Here, I am covering one of his country classics, "Squeegee," an awesome song. Last night at my Monday night Open Mic at The Turquoise, we had the pleasure of playing some of Wes's tunes with some exceptional guests. I play banjo when I back up Wes. Last night we played 3 of his jams with Orv on flute and world class kora master Amadou Fall on kora. We played a few high-energy, transcendent songs right near the end of the show. It was extremely fun. Then Amadou put a cherry on the night with an amazing set of his own. Really cool life this is, yes? Come kick it with us on a Monday some time at The Turquoise, 873 Turquoise St, from 7 to 11. Peace

"The truth is what you make it." That is the simple biut of wisdom at the heart of this song. I remind myself of that often as I go from day to day. This tune was called "What You Make It" initially and then I switched it to "Truth" and now it appears back to "What You Make It." The point remains the same. Things can happen, you can react however you like, but ultimately what you get out of it all is up to you. I like the balance, the justice, the poetry, and the symmetry in all that. The world seems like madness a lot of the time, but if you breathe deep, use patience and look carefully enough, sometimes themes shine through.
One line in this tune that repeats a few times is "I have listened to the angels and the madman in my head." I wrote this years before I got my beloved Poochessa, Angel and I don't believe in coincidences. Angel is my angel, my better half, my best reference. These are all titles I've told folks before when discussing her. I love very very much. She is the good Angel on my shoulder, unequivocally loving me through happiness, sadness and everything. I like happiness. I am claiming it as my new currency. Let all kinds of people battle it out over dollars. They are bypassing the true value in life, amassing grand collections of green paper instead. Happiness, you can grab as much of it as you want. It won't take up any space in your house and you can have as much as you want without taking any from anyone else. In fact, the more you have, the more there is. All hail happiness... or don't.... You choose.
