Operation 365 2... Blog 251

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 251 “Welcome to the Family”

Acceptance is a thought that's been on my mind a ton lately. Being welcomes to a family, or a social circle or a spiritual group. There is no feeling like feeling warmly welcomed and embraced. I recently redubbed The Open Mic I host here in Ocean Beach, The Winston's Wednesday Welcome. The idea is people, no matter how unique they may be, as long as they are respectful and everyone pretty much is, deserve a place where they can go, be themselves, and express themselves if they so choose. It's been working quite well for some time now.

Tonight my dear friend, 98-year old WWII and Korean War vet, The Soul Man joins us. He is in a group called Guiro Grass. They met at Open Mic It is Soul Man on guiro, a Latin percussion instrument Travis Oliver on old-time bluegrass chicken picking and vocals and my acupuncture pal, Aquilino. I love that I helped make an environment where all these folks can storm in, do their thing and feel the love they deserve. Everyone deserves that, actually.

It feels great to be accepted. Lastly, I've noticed that this is where a lot of personal relationships run off the rails, especially those of a romantic nature. No one is going to be exactly the way you want them to be. If you love them and truly want things to work out with them, the best thing you can do is accept them. Love is great, but without accepting and embracing the person you care for, it is not enough. If you all want to do is change someone then you don't really love the one you're with. You don't even accept them. If you can love someone who is being themselves, that is a great place to start. People change anyway. We can't help it. Folks might change in exactly the way you want them to if you just give them some love and the space to find out for themselves, who it is they really are.

Patience. It's not just people at the hospital.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 251 “Teach Your Children” by Crosby, Stills, & Nash

Staying in my spirit of acceptance chatter, this is a beautiful CSN song. I believe it is a Nash number. Ahh, the glorious days where songs had meaningful messages and still got played. “Teach Your Children,” I believe was a number one hit for CSN when the Kent State massacre erupted in Ohio. Neil Young then wrote “Ohio” and they released, It went to the top of the charts, unseating a song by the same band. That is acceptance on their part, of what is important. What the world needs above what they need.

I wrote a song the other day. I was thinking about what it would have been like if I thought all the stuff from school was interesting instead of annoying and boring. I sure would have learned a lot more. I wrote a tune called “Everything Is Cool,” to try to frame things in that way. No idea if that would ever work. Kids can be quizzical, but I like the idea that they could be taught to think it’s all cool. Dream.

Many moving memories of CSN sing-alongs as a freshman in the dorms. Peace Paola.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 251 “Breaking It Down”

I read some stuff from time to time that I find outrageous. It seems clear that seem people are truly convinced they know way better than everybody else. What a tough way to live, always readying for another fall from one’s tenuous perch. It’s great to believe in stuff and believe in what you believe, but that really only extends until you’re looking down on everyone and lecturing from that perspective. No one wants to hear it. Any discussion where both sides don’t approach one anther with love and respect is a conversation not worth having. No one will learn a thing.

So here, I break it down (wiki wiki wiki). I break down my humble take on having respect, love and what really matters most. Love you. Bye.

Operation 365 2... Blog 250

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 250 “Layla” by Eric Clapton

As an impressionable youngster, one of my first jobs was at the mall. In New Jersey, the mall is rite of passage, several actually. Being able to be old enough to go there and get a toy is a step. Being able to go alone and hang out with your friend for hours is another. And getting a job there, well, that’s about the last one that has any real worth.

I did my stint senior year of high school, Record World. That was back when they had music stores. The manager’s name was Dave. He was crazy. He hoped people would steal so he could hit them. There was a real interesting guy named Tony there too. Speaking of Tony’s, life was rolling along pretty swimmingly until my best friend Tony passed away that February.

I had been listening to a new song that hadn’t come out yet. It was about to. I heard it ‘cause I worked at the record store. So had Tony. It was on his answering machine when he died. It was “Tears in Heaven” by Eric Clapton.

Since then, I’ve felt a pretty strong bond to Eric Clapton. It’s more personal and thean musical I guess. Even though I like a lot of his songs that I know he’s never been one of the musicians I followed mostly closely. I played that “Tears in Heaven” song some back then and listened to it more too many times to count.

Well, here we are years later. I’m glad I’m OK. I was pretty upset about all that stuff a long while. I hope Eric is OK too. Here is my version of his “Unplugged” version of his great tune “Layla.” Thanks, friend.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 250 “In What Do You Believe?”

“In What Do You Believe?” This was a little thought I was thinking as I started my day today. I thought about a song about what you believe, well, about what I believe. I don’t know what you believe. So I went for it. Besides missing the change the first few times, it went OK. I edited that out.

I think more talks of things of this nature would be highly illuminating. There is a lot for us to learn about each other and ways the world could optimally perform. Another day for that, we most frequently say. And then we talk about the weather and the big game. It’s OK. We’re all perfectly fine.

I didn’t believe much as a boy. That whole Tony thing happened. Then I started knowing about some stuff, seeing and hearing things, feeling extremely intense feelings. Then I started to believe. Having firm faith comes quite naturally when your beliefs stem from vivid personal experiences. I am deeply grateful for everything. I live to serve and help contribute to happiness and people enjoying life as fully as positively as possible. That’s my thing, but my thing is we are all one. So there is only one thing. And everything happens for a reason. And anything is possible. And unconditionally loving everything and everyone is the highest we can hope to achieve as human beings. Humble Gratitude.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 250 “That’s a Wrap”

So this is the end for my work for today. A smile widens across my face. Yes, I have to copy and paste, load and link, but that’s OK. This is the end of required writing for my brain. That’s not to say I won’t work way more. I just love doing it when it tickles my fancy. Oh, love a world where there are fancies for tickling. THANK YOU.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 249 “My Favorite Thing in the World”

What better way to start the conventional workweek than with my “My Favorite Thing in the World.” It is, without question, this sign. How much more glamorous can it get? You know you give no f-words when you can’t even be bothered to spell the name of your own business correctly on the signs you put up on your work. Classic.

These are in my neighborhood and they bring me boundless joy every time I walk past them. God bless and all hail The Construnction Frence Rental, Inc. company… or whatever your real name is.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 249 “Bleed Light”

One night, a few weeks back, I went through my most recent notebook and took all the spiels I wrote and wrote music for them. A lot of the words already had melodies in my head. In those cases, it’s just a matter of figuring out the chords that fit the rest of it.

“Bleed Light” was one of the more fun ones to write. It was a little different than those others. I had a bit of a breakthrough that day. I was watching a show on one metaphorical hand and literally, fingering out the chords on the keyboard with my left hand. It was neat. I’d never done anything like that before. Then I wrote the words to this one and it’s sister song, “Do What You Got to Do,” and felt productivity/relaxation-soothed.

I’m not exactly sure what “Bleed Light” means. And that’s about all I have to say right now. Greetings. Salutations. Hallelujah. Hope you dig.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 249 “Sentimental Lady” by Bob Welsh

“Sentimental Lady” is a song I’ve admired since I was first exposed to it, by my long time amigo, Chris Scelzo, aka Chris Rex. He is one my musical daddies. He was one of the first to make me see playing guitar as cool. Then we became friends and he turned me on to all kinds of neat nuggets from the wide world of Seventies songage. I remain deeply grateful for his friendship and all the wisdom he shared. The Kinks were his favorite, but old Fleetwood Mac, Ian Hunter, Mott the Hoople, ELO and all kinds of other folks got cranked hard too.

So, cheers to Bob Welsh, in the great beyond. Cheers to Chris Rex and his magic wand. Cheers to you all and your fabulous lives. Cheers to and peace and freedom. Put down all those knives.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 248 “Six”

“Six” is my lucky number. Not really, but that’s the first line of this tune. It just jumped into my head a couple of years back. My new fiancee and I were about to leave the house to spend the night the casino/hotel, a special occasion. I stopped and penned “Six” first. Later, we stood near a Roulette table. Leanne put dough on six and she got paid.

Here, years later, my fiancée is my wife for two years. We got together six years ago today. Another anniversary. A few months after we got together, we got a pup, Nigel. He was about four months old and if we take that back, that made him born just about today, six years ago, the same day Leanne and I got together. So we made that his birthday. Pretty neat.

Six years. Amazing. Hope you dig this “Six” jam. Happy Sunday.

Double feature with "Ground Reprise"

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - BONUS - 248 "Crazy for You” by Madonna

Madonna’s songs back in the day were pretty neat. I have no idea what her songs sound like now. I don’t know what almost anybody’s songs sound like actually. So it’s nothing against Madonna. Think she considered Happydonna as a cheery alter ego. I doubt it. It’s never too late to reinvent yourself. Lord knows she knows that.

Back in the day, Madonna was busting out one sexy video after another and getting the young fellas on the world, like myself into a veritable tizzy. Those times were good, or at least, that’s how it feels in retrospect. Memory is funny in that way. Who knows what really happened?

Well, I vaguely recall Madonna in a dark room in a tasteful blue dress, singing this sweet love song. I guess “Crazy For You” is a sexy song, but Madonna, in her day mastered the many faces of sexy.

Happy six-year dating anniversary to my dear wife, Leanne aka, Leannta Claus, the gift that keeps on giving. Happy sixth birthday to our boy, Nigel. I’m “Crazy for You,” behbeh.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 248 "The ‘Itis"

We all have on ‘itis or another from time to time. It could be colitis, appendicitis, or arthritis. Hopefully, not meningitis. There are all other kinds of ‘Itises than can affect us throughout the course of our daily lives. Long ago, as I began my undergraduate life, a close friend who went on to be famous human, Conor Grennan, told me of this band he’d see as an undergrad at UVA. It was The Dave Mathews Band. It was startling to watch them become world famous virtually seconds later. That’s Conor for you. I’d love to read his autobiography. He’s probably writing it now.

Anyway, all these years later, his favorite band in college is soon making it’s presence felt. Now, I’m not here to talk smack on any musical humans, especially not on any as talented as the aforementioned DMB. That being said, I’ve managed to miss all their concerts these last 20 years. Fear not, my neighbor has cranked constantly. I hear them lots. I gave him a couple of Jefferson Jay CDs and he cranks them from time to time. They usually sound better than I remember, so that is nice.

Dave is fine. I wish him the best. But sometimes, my neighbor has his ‘Itis. Dave Mathews Band-itis. And that’s contagious. And sometimes. Especially when I go outside, it gets on me. All things considered, as far as ‘Itises go, it’s relatively innocuous. But there is no vaccine. And there is no cure. Whoa, Lovecats.

My wife adds, “itis” means inflammation. Sounds about right. Thank you, honey. Happy six years. Love.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 248 “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift

I just realized as I was about to post it, that I did “Crazy for You” 17 days ago. Doh! I better get crafty here quick...

And off he went, deep into the annals, in search of… Another cover tune…

I found a couple. Hooray prepared!

I heard a rumor Taylor wasn’t too keen on folks covering her jams. Hopefully, that was groundless speculation and she’ll be stoked or indifferent. That Prince fella made me take down my “Cream” vid five years back and that’s not a circumstance I’m looking replicate. Dig? Without my beloved wife, I may not know nay Taylor Swift songs at all. Because of her I know one. This one.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay – Covers - 247 “The Way You Make Me Feel” by Michael Jackson

I highly doubt Michael Jackson write this song. Do you think the guy who wrote his songs but the “hee hees” in there? And the “Aowoohs?” And the “Come on, girls?” I like to think Mike added those himself.  I always liked this tune. I bought “Bad” when it came out and I liked a bunch of tunes on it. “Dirty Diana,” “The Man in the Mirror,” “Smooth Criminal,” Mike made a mean record in his day.

I have a couple of versions of “The Way You Make Me Feel,” that I played. I think I found the money one, (ha ha), but I may check on make sure. Nothing but the best (I have to offer) for my friends here in the magical, mystical land of the Operation 365. Two.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals – 247 “If” by Jefferson Jay

A few weeks back, I got a catchy little couplet in my head.

The sun is shiny and bright and the day is new.
I’m so happy being in love with you.

That’s a little cute for me, frankly, but I was feeling it and it was the nice start of something, I felt. So I wrote more and I went in t a few different directions. I think, subconsciously, I wanted to write a love song that looked at a lot more of life than the love itself. Life is a lot more than being in love, but if you are in love, then that can form a sort of canopy over all your life. Even your thoughts that appear unrelated are lifted up in the context of a life in love. So I wrote.

The journey, like life and love itself, led me all kinds of unexpected places. “Blurred lines,” “a bowling alley”… I just remembered I was at The Tavern + Bowl when I wrote it. I have this thing for carrying it around my notebook, especially if I go anywhere fun, so I can write if I find myself inspired. It happens. My wife and I were headed to the ballpark. She went to powder her nose. (Hilarious expression) and I wrote this.

The journey of love and life was far from over. Next thing I knew, I was an undergrad, back at UMASS, on Belchertown Road. Mike’s Billiards, The Mobil, hanging with Ryan Smith. Still present, still in the light of love, but also in Amherst again. Not only was I there, but I was with Ryan too, wherever he went all these years. Aspen? He has worked on the X Games for years in production. Love and life can be bodiless, It is truly amazing how music and thought can transport us anywhere we’re prepared to go. If?

If we’re prepared to go. That’s all. Are you prepared for love? Thanks Ryan. I don't know if you remember, but long ago, on a quiet evening in San Francisco, you taught me to sing the blues. Congrats on getting the band back together. I’d love to play a show with you some time. Peace

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 247 “Outlandish Views”

Decided today would be as good a day as any to espouse some “Outlandish Views.” A similar approach seems to have taken some folks real far these days. General election, anyone? So I thought I'd dip in to some of this and see what zany opinions I could offer in hopes of having my life exploded by fame, fortune and misery some time soon. Love you. XOXOXOXOXO

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay – Covers - 246 “Trenchtown Rock” by Bob Marley

“One good thing about music is when it aches you feel no pain. So hit me with music.”  Just a small sample from the genius of Bob Marley, specifically “Trenchtown Rock.” I am tremendously grateful Bob Marley lived. It is his path that I aim to following terms of making music, being true to your beliefs and doing what you can to stomp out war, racism, and intolerance of all kinds. Many folks have forgotten the role of artists in the world and Bob Marley’s spirit and music lives to remind us what we can do if we put ourselves out there. It wasn’t easy for Bob. He was shot, but even that didn’t stop him from following his heart and doing all he could for love and peace. Hail Bob.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals – 246 “Find Your Stride” by Jefferson Jay

The other day, I improvised a little number of a blues in G. I gave a Bob Dylan style of making up the words. It has a nice little meaning, I listened to it a couple of times just now ascertain what the meaning was ands to give it a name. I already half forget, beyond the title. So if you really want to know you may have to watch the roughly two minutes of video that this song is. You can do it. If you got this far, that’s almost certain.

I believe in you. Your stride is just a few steps away. Get walking and enjoy the glorious path to wherever it leads.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 246 “A Little About Me”

So, folks, one of my sources is reporting that I may find myself on the HuffingtonPost.com tomorrow. I figured that may lead more people here to 365land to them, I say welcome. I love many things, as many as I possibly can, actually. One thing I don't love is folks taking themselves way too seriously. Where's the fun in that. Contrary to common conceptions, enjoying happiness is the point of living as love is the point of life. Now don't get me wrong. Our life-affirming happiness should not hurt ourselves or others too much, but short of that it the hokey pokey. By this I mean. that's what it's all about. Many confused folks. God bless every single one of them. Battling all the time. I respect them, but there are many ways to skin a cat, something I would never do, I'll have you know. Who cam up with these old expressions anyway? I should listen to that NPR show.

From time, to time, I love me a little nonsense, some silliness, something to make sure life's still fun. Here's a taste spoon of that. 31 flavors but I'm a Mariposa Ice Cream guy, myself. A little something different. Actually three something different. Every day, for a year. I'm here for you. I care. That's may choice. I hope your choices make you feel fulfilled too. Nice to see you. Thank you. Come again. Love.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay – Covers - 245 “Just Breathe” by Eddie Vedder

A few months ago, a dear friend of mine, Dick Van Ransom Magana passed away. Dick made the best ice cream in the world, most recently at his shop in Normal Heights, Mariposa Ice Cream. He and his wife, Anna were one of the most loving couples I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. I am very sorry for her loss.

At Dick’s memorial service, people from all walks of life flooded the old Catholic church to pay their respects, to their friend, family member, of friendly neighborhood “ice cream man.” At the end of the ceremony, “Just Breathe” was played. Apparently, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam wrote it, but the version they played was performed by Willie Nelson and his son, Lukas. It was moving. Dick and Anna enjoyed live music every chance they got. I had the pleasure of taking in a couple of shows with them. And every moment of our friendship was full of fun. I miss him, but cherish our eternal bond. Few supported my music more than Dick and Anna. Thanks guys. Onward and upward, they say. It is a touching sentiment. I love you, Anna. Peace Dick.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals – 245 “Good Dog Nigel” by Jefferson Jay with John Lennon

John Lennon was not a personal friend of mine, but Randy Robinson is. I am thankful for it.  Awhile back, about five-and-a-half years now, my future wife Leanne and I got a little pup named Nigel. It was during the first 365 and little puppy Nigel was featured as a blossomed into a lovely pooch. One day, Randy brought a poem to my Open Mic. He gave it to me to give to  Leanne. It was called “Good Dog Nigel” and it was by John Lennon. I was instantly inspired and I quickly wrote some music for this poem, making it a song. I honestly hope Yoko is OK with it. Better still, it would be, if she lijed it. But one step at a time.

Interestingly, “Good Dog Nigel” is about putting “Nigel” to sleep at three in the morn. Awwww. Sad. Hopefully, I’ll never have to do that to that to our buy, Nigel. In the meantime, here’s the song I wrote with John Lennon.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 245 “No Flies on Me”

"No Flies on Me" is one of those old expressions, I don't know what it means. Now would be one of those times I could look it up and learn. If not now, when? Right? I guess I just talked myself into it, but I'm not truly interested yet. Hopefully, this knowledge will make me glad I looked.Good luck finding someone more awake then me. You can't. I am 100% up. Ask that fly who thought mine was a face to land on. Call me, Froggy Miyagi. It's my new stage name.

Some commenter, mgarizona on WordReference.com said,

"It means one is wide-awake and active, especially mentally alert. A sleepy animal will not swat away the flies that light on it, an alert animal will.

Good luck finding someone more awake then me. You can't. I am 100% up. Ask that fly who thought mine was a face to land on. Can't do that either, can you? Well, you'd have to go to El Cajon. Call me Froggy Miagi. It's my new stage name.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay – Covers - 244 “Starry Gazer” by Chelsea Flor

I have always felt exceptionally connected to my friends who have passed on. It is the strangest sort of gift, one that can only come with the type of experience nobody would choose. Loss. Lots of it. It can be character-building and it is nice to be confident, as I am, that far more awaits us when we are done with our work here.

Chelsea Flor was a wise and wandering spirit. Still is, I imagine. Why stop now? She passed from her body a couple of years ago. I always found her presence to be angelic and comforting. I enjoyed watching her play and provided her as many opportunities as I could to do so, especially in the early days of my run at Portugalia. When she passed, I was sad. Since right then, I wanted to learn “Starry Gazer” and play it. Today, Facebook politely informed me that it is her birthday. Our mutual friend Annie Rettic was kind enough to share the chords and lyrics with me. Thanks Annie. It felt amazing to play this tune. Very moving. I was moved. Thanks Chelsea for everything you did. I know you write a lot of songs and spiritual stuff. I hope to learn amore about your life’s work. I appreciate you, your soul, your spirit and thanks.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals – 244 “Sweet Berries For Us” by Jefferson Jay

One time, not too long ago I was hanging with my friend Naomi. She is awesome. About as supportive a friend as you could ever hope to have. We met her friend Suzie, that night. It was a lovely day. There was a friend of hers who had passed away. His name was Eladio. It seems like he was a really cool dude. We ate sweet berries and sang this song.

A couple of days ago, my bass player/friend Orion brought over some sweet berries for us. He brought raspberries and blueberries. And a Duckfoot Hazelnut Porter. Savory. We enjoyed them. So did a baby. Not the porter.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 244 “Water”

Water. I’m very grateful for it. In fact, some science folks say I am 90% it, or something. So I am water and water is my brother. “Water” is more of a song than just “Words,” but it has words and they are “Water.” Even if it didn’t have words, though, to me, it could be “Words,” because the only point of words is communication and music is much like words in that way. It’s not as much about “Words” as it is about saying something.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay – Covers - 243 “Green Fields” by Brothers Four

I had never heard of "Green Fields." It is old, like early Sixties, old, or older. I was writing one of the Christmas musicals I write for my work and I asked some of the Senior special needs folks, for song title suggestions. One friend offered “Green Field” and I said sure. My song was about a kid who was working hard to make money, so it seemed sensible. It was awhile later I discovered she loves this tune and “Green Fields” is already a song. I still need to change my song's name. One of these days, I will.

Over some weeks, I would play this song for her. She likes to sing along and these old tunes bring back warm memories for these guys. I learn tons from the people I work with every day. Folks might think I'm being cute, but I'm serious. I learn about the old songs, the old ways of life. I learn about how to be polite, respectful, appreciative and in the moment. Over 95% of the people I work with bring that to the program each day. I am so fortunate and blessed to have these folks in my life. They're like a green field to me. Open, free and easy, comforting, supportive, loving and true. Thanks, my friends.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals – 243 “Bye Bye Games” by Jefferson Jay

I’m a big believer in maintaining a flexible context. It is the only way to find depth in being a sports fan. I feel that great artists and wordsmiths have been hiding alternative insight in the subtext and context of their commentaries for some time now. We need to be willing to read or hear ideas with and without the contexts they are offered in the elicit maximum wisdom. My point is, in this context, the Olympic games are gone, having vacated us right on schedule once again. No sporting event leaves us higher and dryer for years on end than the Olympics. I am nobody’s once-every-four-years TV booty call. At least visit me once a year please. Even the circus will do that.

So while” Bye Bye Games” was written as another adieu to the wrestling, table tennis, pole vault, fencing, triple jump and all these other cameo sports, please consider “games” to be any games you’ve finally tired of in your life. I have notice more than ever that people ware willing to endure some sensational nonsense. It seems folks will do almost anything to avoid saying “Bye Bye Games.” So here is yet another attempt on my behalf to encourage folks to choose what soothes their soul. Taking a chance on something new is OK. You will not drown, just because you don’t know exactly how to swim yet. Be a Phelps. Jah Rastafari. Not a Lochte. It is up to you. Swim how you choose. But even if you can’t float, sometimes the only safe choice is to try, or at least say “Bye Bye.” In other words, “Run.” “Bolt.” Find your gold.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 243 “Is Phelps a Rasta?”

Jah Rastafari. Does 23-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps say that and pray that 50 times before he goes to sleep every night? Probably, but do we really know for sure. What we do know is that our Olympic hero/Cheech and Chong of the medal stand has done more for marijuana than anyone since Bob Marley and The Beatles. Life is funny. Even brilliant athletes like Phelps-y don’t get to decide exactly what kind of hero they will be.  Do you think he smokes the Acapulco Gold? It’s hard to say, but most likely.

Here, we consider the possibility that it is a deep religious sentiment that leads Phelps to pull tubes. Is it? Isn’t it? Whoa. If his second career is as a reggae icon or if he grows out those Medusa gold medal dreads I was speculating about, that could be a sure fire sign that Michael Phelps is in deed a Rastafari. Stay tuned.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals – 242 “Finally Found” by Jefferson Jay

I love Mondays. Have for some time. Not sure how far back it goes, but until at least 1996. Back then, I lived in Arcata. I was an undergraduate at Humboldt State University. Every Monday night, I would go to this bar that had live jazz. Sam Maez Jazz it was called. I was one of the only people there usually. I would sit, often by myself and I would write in my notebook and learn about jazz and how to act professionally. Sam and his band always brought their best effort, no matter who or how many people attended. Over the next few years, my little Monday secret, got let out of the bag. Now, lots of folks would come out for jazz night. I had developed friendships with San and the other fellows who would join him. It was profoundly meaningful to me. I miss Monday night jazz and I miss Sam and the guys.

Now, I live in San Diego. We have band practices most Monday nights. "Finally Found" is a song I made up the other day. It may not be totally done. Maybe you will finish it and make it your own. I don't know. Maybe I will finish it too. I remember it had some potential. I love life. I am very happy and humble to be participating in it. I hope to give back as much as I can in this life. I'd love to share my perspective and help folks gain the appreciation I have. I'd like to help people realize that being kind and considerate and helpful will make you happy and that happiness will carry you far further than gathering possessions and accolades at the expense of others.  We are best when we lift each other up.

Acceptance is an essential ingredient in love. Love patience, nurturing and understanding. Berating someone into doing the right thing never works. Teach a man to fish or teach a man to be a vegan or a gun-user or whatever, and you give them the tools to success and survival. Berate them, judge them, you only teach them to berate and judge. Every day is a chance to learn to love and grow. We deserve it.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay – Covers - 242 “Paint It Black” by The Rolling Stones

My first recollections of “Paint It Black” are not even of “Paint It Black." I was exposed to Howard Stern at a very young age. Well before the age of ten. The first time I heard “Paint It Black,” was a parody Howard's guys wrote about racist comment made by CBS football talking head Jimmy the Greek. It was classic. "The white is lazy," Jimmy's voice repeated as the song faded out. There was another one back then, written from the perspective of Regis Philbin's quadriplegic son. Pretty harsh and formatively affected my sense of humor perhaps.

Speaking of harsh, ever heard they lyrics to the Stone's tunes "Sweet Black Angel," or "Brown Sugar?" Whoa, doubting that would fly now. I went to a Padres game a few years back on Black History night at the ball park or whatever it was and they played "Brown Sugar" between innings. Ahhh... Only the Padres... not good at much. Not even close, really.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 242 "The Theme to The Sports Song of the Week"

In life some times, even great intentions won't tell us the best use of our time. So we wonder. Like Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton, Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble, and countless other fictional duos who sought a solution to the riddle that is: Financial independence.

One of my co-horts is an enterprising and talented gentleman named Wes Davis. I celebrated his anniversary on the 365 yesterday and the birth of his first child near this project's inception. One day, weeks ago, we chilled. As per the norm, Wes had a million amazing ideas on what we should all be doing with our lives. It is so hard to know which ones to work on.  I can testify. We signed a million dollar contract that day, to work on a sports podcast, starring me, produced by him.

He went back East for his Ukrainian second wedding after that and I picked up the ball and ran with it and for the last five weeks. Every Monday since then I have posted a "Sports Song of the Week." A few were brand new, other recycled classics from my appearances on The Scott and BR Radio Show on themighty1090.com and 1090AM in San Diego, 3-6 PST. Today, I explore another area of development our future podcast requires, a catchy theme song. Allow me to create in your space as I find my way to the what may some day be "The Theme to The Sports Song of the Week Podcast" God bless.

I chopped out most of the "developing" stuff and left just the kernel of the idea that I got to. Maybe I should change the name of this video. I will. I did. It's now called "The Theme to The Sports Song of the Week" and it is "The Sports Song of the Week," six in a row, for those keeping score at home. Honorable mention goes to The Baby Bombers, Yoenis Cespedes, and Brock Lesnar not knowing the difference between UFC and WWE.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay – Covers - 241 “Old Time Rock N’ Roll” by Bob Seger

Negative is the new positive, folks, the truth is what you make it. Turn that frown upside-down, I believe, is another way of saying something similar. It is Sunday and as fate would have it, it is sunny. Hooray! How did they know when they named it? Even though Tom Cruise makes me uncomfortable sometimes, here is the number he brought back to prominence in his “Risky Business” underwear dance. When I record videos in my underwear, I do everything I can to make sure that part remains off camera. Shy? Humble? Who knows? Respectful? Perhaps. Regardless, Here’s some Seeg on a Sun.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals – 241 “Finally Found” by Jefferson Jay

Made this ditty up at work the other day. I think it has some potential. There were a few decent lines in here that may be worth revisiting. I like the idea of finally arriving at a destination you have pursued for some time. It may be your bed after a long day. It may the top of a mountain after a long day or week of hiking. It may be a delicious plate of chow when you are hungry. Even some personal revelation. Whatever it is, it feels good to reach the destination, take a deep breath and reflect on what you’ve done. It doesn’t get much more human than that, my friends.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 241 “Have a Glorious Happy Sunday”

It was just brought to my attention that today is the anniversary of some dear friends of our, Larissa and Wes. I remember their wedding day well. In fact, I wrote a song for them as I do for weddings and babies and things of that nature. The song is called “Larissa and Wes.” I certainly anticipated performing that on their anniversary but that now seems like it might happen tomorrow instead.

In either case, it’s like I said, there are few things more human and gratifying than arriving at the completion of a long-term goal. For many folks, whether they realize it or not, that can be marriage or having a family. You never know when it’s going t happen to you. Trust me on that. I still truly want to do that “Larissa and Wes” song today and maybe I will. That, like so many other thing in life remains, “To Be Determined.” I like being determined.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals – 241 “Larissa and Wes” by Jefferson Jay

And a glorious happy Sunday to all of you too. Hey! Look what I found. Beaming Boy Scouts, Batman! Somebody prepared for this anniversary back on February 6. Yes, this someone may have been slightly giddy, but what’s wrong with that, I say? Nothing. SO Yes! Let’s do it. Happy Anniversary, Larissa and Wes. I am glad you finally found each other. Ironically, that will push “Finally Found” ‘til tomorrow. Oh, sweet irony.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay – Covers - 240 “At This Moment” by Billy Vera and The Beaters

Some years ago “At This Moment” was on “Family Ties,” a popular 1980’s sit com. That’s where I first became aware of the tune. It had a video I liked too. This led to me buying the 45 of this number. Yes, the 45. I cranked it. I’d even sing along. I had no idea from formative those vinyl sing-along sessions would prove to be in my adult life. The B Side on my 454 was called” Peanut Butter,” which is a pretty humorous song in itself.

Yes, I always had a soft spot for “At This Moment.” My pal was pretty excited she knew who did this tune. That’s pretty impressive considering it was a one-hit wonder before she was born. She didn’t get it exactly right, but I loved her guess nonetheless. Entertainment is. “At This Moment”

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals – 240 “Angels” by Jefferson Jay

You ever feel the presence of angels, spirits that love and support you and help you make it through the day. I see ‘em them everywhere and in all kinds of things. What one person might see as a coincidence, I see synergy. I don’t believe in coincidences. I just think the universe is selective in when it chooses to give us a glimpse in to how purposeful everything actually is. Maybe this song is that for you. Maybe you’d been feeling the “Angels” and you just need a little song to lay it all out for you and remind you how mystical our world can be.

As is always the case in these sorts of situations, you need to believe. Otherwise, there are no angels, period. For that matter, if you don’t believe in Oreos, they don’t exist either. It’s amazing what folks can block in the interests of believing what they think they need to. This is why folks believe in Scientology and all kinds of incredible things. I wish them the best. Hail Angel and Hail “Angels.”

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words 240 “Angel Answers”

Still no getting what the “Angels” thing is all about. Here are a few words that breaking down a little less musically. I hope you are feeling the groove, the vibe, or whatever you prefer to call it. I hope you are feeling the angels. Love you. Your online friend, JJ

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay – Covers - 239 “She’s Got a Way With Words” by Blake Shelton

Always appreciate what you have. It’s probably better than you think it is. That’s a nice way of saying it could always be worse. I prefer to look on the bright side. By have, I don’t mean stuff. Stuff is overrated. Stuff brings more headaches than happiness. By have I mean happiness, love, comfort, security, friends, shelter, food, an appreciating for things. Those are things we need to have at least somewhat to enjoy life, and ultimately, that is its purpose. Many folks are sideswiped with the need to accumulate, like we are in some sort of competition for who can have the best and most things. That’s silly. If no true joy comes with those things than those things are pointless. They become exposed for what they are, things. Love is not a thing. It’s THE thing.

Some times in life, you need to do things for people. I love helping and I love making people happy. At my job, people make requests. I try to play them if I can, whether I’ve heard the songs or not. Country music is pretty salacious these days I learned, when I dipped in to Blake Shelton’s catalog. I’ve see his face on tabloids and at Rite Aid hawking something, but I know nothing of how his songs sound. I played “She’s Got a Way With Words.” It’s a hair spicy for what I go for, but we’re all adults there and there’s nothing they couldn’t say on the 6PM news, so off we go. Not quote to Australia (where I learned Keith Urban is from) but to a room with a view where I learn a little about today’s country.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 239 “Big Girls Cry” by Jefferson Jay

So I write and direct Christmas musicals for special needs adults as part of my job. I’ve written a number of episodes with a lovable cast of snow forest characters and the folks who have brought these characters to life the last two Decembers are many miles beyond charming. Each one has a handful of songs and until recently, I had planned on filling the final months of this 365 with tunes and verbiage from these shows. Then something changed.

I wrote and wrote and wrote and kept writing. Probably about eight musicals last month. Exactly 8. For a total of 16. 16 x 5. That’s 80 tunes. More than half of what’s left of this project. Then I asked myself. That very question. What’s left? I already have given away, let’s see…. Today’s Day 239 = 365 from the last one. Calculator time.

I have already given away 604 original songs. I decided I’ll save these in case anyone ever wants to pay for anything. I’ve noticed that that “Frozen” did pretty well with magical snow characters and singing. I would love to help my special actors make some dough and show people personally, more what special needs folks are really about.

So, I’m not doing it. That said, call me if you want to produce some awesome snow musicals. I think they might work best as cartons. They are very positive and cute and lesson-y.

But, this here is an exception. Here is “Big Girls Cry,” The Magic Snowwoman’s answer to “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” which if you listen to carefully, says basically the same thing. “It’s Alright to Cry.” NFL great Rosey Grier sang that on “Free to Be You and Me.” It’s still true. I covered Blake Shelton here to start today’s 365 and this song mentions No Doubt. I think there’s a connection there. Isn’t there always? The world is full of ‘em. Shout out to my Magic Snowwoman on the inspiration and the education. I left the long cut so you could see what I mean.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 238 “The Farmer’s Wife” by Jefferson Jay

Do you know what revisionist history is? It is when historians, or regular people use the passage of time to change history. Often, they manipulate events in a way that is advantageous to them in one way or another. I was singing “Three Blind Mice” earlier today. “One ran off with the Farmer’s wife. He cut off their tails with a carving knife…” Those are the lyrics, right? Pardon me, while I Google. Preparing to Google.

I began to think, is it she, the farmer’s wife who cut off their tails. Was Mouse #1 running after her and not “off with her.” As I thought. I wonder if Google will replace the Bible in the future as the go to source for what really happened long ago.

This, right here, (thank you Wikipedia) …
Three blind mice. Three blind mice.
See how they run. See how they run.
They all ran after the farmer's wife,
Who cut off their tails with a carving knife,
Did you ever see such a sight in your life,
As three blind mice?

…is revisionist history. That’s not how it went down at all. How do I know? The farmer, well, let’s just say he was a friend of mine, before that no-good interloping mouse ran off with his wife and wrecked his life. That’s’ all I have to say for now except, his name was Mickey.

Either that, or I’m just a little confused. Don’t even get me started on Old McDonald. Or his evil son Ronald.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 238 “Please Do Not Run Off with Farmers Wife”

Please be careful around morality-challenged, visually impaired rodentia. Here, we look in at the set-up for “The Farmer’s Wife” rant/song. It was very cinematic of me to put the set-up after the video it is built off wouldn’t ya say? I’m two parts Tarantino, one part “Momento,” half-a-part pamplemousse. Nonsensical blind mouse rant, exemplified. Here, we see how we stumbled into this mysterious corner conversationally. If this doesn’t teach ya something, perhaps it’s just not informative.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay – Covers - 238 “After Midnight” by J.J. Cale

One of my special pals suggested I play this one, so I did. Eric Clapton made it famous but his pal J.J. Cale wrote it. Dude also write “Cocaine.” Sometimes I like to sing “Spokane,” a little ditty about a Washington town, to the same tune. I don’t care if it’s properly spoken “Spoke Ann.” Spo-Cane!

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 237 “Drag Me Down” by One Direction

“Drag Me Down” is another one of those 365 songs I’ve never heard before. A couple of the young ladies I play music for at work started telling me their favorite One Direction tunes this morning and “Drag Me Down” was one they mentioned. Here, I interpret it in a much more Johnny Cash-ish way than at the pop sensations did, at least according the ladies who have actually heard it. It’s all music and everything in life is open to interpretation. Let the judges judge. May the rest of us enjoy as much as possible. L’chaim.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 237 “The Best Music Ever Dude” by Jefferson Jay

Sense of humor? Absurdity? Ionesco, anyone? I don't know and I don't care. Art. Oh, yes! Great art. Why not? What's the point? Because. You do it. The same? Better? No matter. No such thing. This is a moment. This is song. This entertainment and it's different than what anyone else ever is going got try. I dare the world to prove otherwise. The point? No. Just another day in a holy glorious life. #ExpressYourself Am I “The Best Music Ever Dude?” Well, can you prove that I'm not?

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 237 “Excellence Personified”

Folks, If I am guilty of anything, it may well be having too much fun on Day 237 of the Operation 365. Occasionally I am misconstrued as an intellectual or someone with an above average IQ. I beg to differ, friends, and as Exhibit A in my refutation of these allegations I present the fact that I still follow WWE. Yes, that would be embarrassing if I possessed a higher capacity for shame. But no, I accept me, embarrassing interests and all.

So in wrestling, there are faces, (the good guys) and heels (bad guys). I find it fun to sometimes be both. Acting! So if you find yourself, tweaked in any way, shape, or form by the unabashed boasting featured in today's 365, SIT ON IT, BUDDY!

Joking, I'm joking. Seriously, you've got to lighten up. It is fun to pretend to be bad sometimes. It livens up the fruit punch, you know, like it's 1966, but not really. So, hopefully I stoked your creative fires with mine today. Shouting, boasting, unabashedly, it's fun to throw yourself into a role from time to time. I don't really think I'm better than you (or anyone) at music or anything. Fools think stuff like that. It's all relative and we are all one. How you supposed to better than yourself? Oh, I know. Grow, improve, add love, and rise. It's the only way.

Operation 365 2... Blog 236

I’ve been writing songs like a songwriting banshee lately, though I can’t say I’m certain for a banshee would write songs. I don’t even know what a banshee is, I just realized. I’ve been writing every which way you can: solo, with friends, in bunches, with lyrics form the notebook, from scratch on a whim. All of ‘em and then some. Now I’m writing this, holding on with the IRS. 24:15 and counting.

So, it’s been fun. When it comes to time to share, it’s hard to settle on one. Or perhaps my thinking is impaired due to the sweat and responsibility. At leasy I have my paper towel to dry me. I could use a fan. It always seems just a room or two away. In this case, it literally is.

No idea what this video will be when there is one. I recorded tons today. Not sure what to share and what’s OK. 42:54 now, took a rest. Loaded videos in to computer friend.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 236 “She’s Leaving Home” by The Beatles

So, is this the greatest version ever of “She’s Leaving Home?” How about this? Is today’s the world’s most beautiful day. It’s pretty beautiful out there… The sun is shining. The sky is welcoming and blue. The breeze breathes sweet relief. So I don’t know, but I do know that it doesn’t matter. Greatest. Worst. These terms are overrated and overused. Capitalism. The Olympics. Battles make us forget the essence of everything excellent. It was never winning or losing. It was playing the game. It’s the simple fact that we exist. I’m not saying you deserve a trophy for it. I’m saying a day breathing air and loving and I’ll leave the trophies for the capitalist champions and the Olympics.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 236 “Just Now” by Jefferson Jay

Life is short. There’s hardly time to climb all the mountains we dream of, or to sing off every stage, We do what we can. We breathe. We create. We live. It’s great, far greater than we realize. Chasing invisible accomplishments, we overlook our greatest step, existing here alive each day. Thank you my friends, for welcoming this song into your life, this song that I wrote here, just for you, “Just Now.” Love on, my friends.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 236 “ Sigh Young”

So at the end of this part of today’s musical adventure, I made up a song for you called “Just Now,” which is when I wrote and what it’s all about. Then I ranted and raved awhile about what the meaning of the whole thing was. The meaning is enjoy it, ‘cause it’s all great and then it’s all gone. “Wrong” notes… there’s no such thing.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 235 "Ground"

One of man’s most dependable and overlooked partners is ground. Is there a more foundational friend for man than the surface that supports his toesies. Clearly, not. Imagine, if you will for a moment, a world without ground. Floating aimlessly, like in space, or worse, falling, endlessly, like in a world without ground. See?

It is a time for a moment of reflection and profound appreciation for our most frequently silent amigo. Expecting nothing, offering never-ending support, ground is our everything. Hail you, ground.

Anti shout-out to quicksand, earthquakes and tsunamis, those rare instances when ground starts free-lancing and goes rogue. All the more reason to honor traditional ground behavior, I say.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 235 "Do the Olympics Love You?" by Jefferson Jay

Welcome to Olympics Day on this here operation 365 2. It’s a bonanza of athletic excitement for two weeks every four years. But then what? It stops. Does it ask if you want it to stop? Never. It leaves you high and dry, desperate for it’s return, whenever the heck it gets around to coming back, approximately every four years. How would you feel if you mother or a lover treated you with such haphazard regard. You’d feel like that sandbox the long jumpers jump in, I bet.

Folks, Americans, especially ladies, have a rabid love affair, with these two quadrennial weeks where we devote ourselves to sports we are otherwise unaware of. It’s OK. It’s the human interest stories, like the polluted pool and the swimmer who got robbed at gunpoint that truly tug at our heart strings. Bottom line folks, is that the Olympics are the best and we are lucky to watch commercials that pay for them. Shot out to the Olivers and Cat Chengery, who really light up when discussing these athletic achievements. They inspired this song. Ask yourself, my friends, would the Olympics let you cry on their shoulder if you had a broken heart. I wonder.

Those of you keeping score at home can check the box for five straight “Sports Songs of the Week.”

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 235 "Bugler's Dream" by Leo Arnaud

Now I don’t know the name of The Olympic Song. That’s what I call it. I guess I’m going to have to look it up. What I do know, is I crushed it, roughly as hard as you can possibly a capella crush a magnum opus of this genre. I am the Usain Bolt of this. We are all the Usain Bolt of being ourselves. That’s a pretty awesome thing, actually.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals – 234 “More On” by Jefferson Jay

Late last night, I was falling asleep and then I got an idea for a song. “More On.” Get it? That’s usually where it starts. Seconds later, the whole verse had written itself in my head. Complicating thing still more, I was finally comfortable. It is hot in my house. It was sweaty in my bedroom last night and that was just lying there. So, I had to seize the opportunity for sleep and hope I’d still have some of it in the morning. I tried to memorize in my final thoughts for the day as an awake person.

Fortunate I was to remember these moments today when I awoke. I had it pretty clear I thought, until the paper was near. The song flowed easily. I wrote in twenty minutes or so while hanging out with friends after breakfast. The only line I struggled to remember I was the last line I wrote before I fell asleep. The one that began with “cunning.” Any way, thanks to the commercial I hear when I listen to WFAN on the Tune In app for partial inspiration. I think it’s about some thing dental. Have a pun on this glorious Sunday

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers – 234 “The Last Tango on 16th Street” by Boz Scaggs

My father-in-law is one of the coolest people in the world. His name is Tom Pearl and if you know him, then you know. No sense in regaling you with Tom Pearl stories. It IS one of those had to be there things. Well, you can still be there. He remains in his prime and he’s a septuagenarian, SAG card holding, motor bike racing stuntman. And frankly, that’s not the half of it. Not even close.

He told me once he’d like to hear me play this “The Last Tango on 16th Street.” We listened. And learned it. Figured out it was a blues in some key. Maybe E. It is not offered on the Internet for easy access. I found some lyrics but as I sang them I found that they were flawed too. Shock. Some of the words weren’t even conceivable like “beronnes” and “spachings” and “flores” and “paise to be descrese.” I wish I’d used http://www.metrolyrics.com/last-tango-on-16th-street-lyrics-boz-scaggs.html, instead of http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/bozscaggs/lasttangoon16thstreet.html

Oh well. Cheers Tom. I needed a tune and thought of you. I don’t really recall if it sounds like this, but hopefully it will do. I went for it, took it adventurous and made it my own. In essence, I did it like you. Thanks. Peace.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers – 233 “Joe’s Garage” by Frank Zappa

So, it this the greatest version ever of “Joe’s Garage?” Respecting subjectivity, I’m gonna guess no, but does that make it not worth doing or listening to? I’m going to have go with no. In assessing events, context is everything. Seeing everything in its proper perspective helps us understand what everything is. Imagine what we’d think about lightning or rainbows or the ocean if we didn’t know what they happened…. Wait a minute… Do we? I don’t actually. I wish I knew. Why we have lightning. Rainbows. I have no idea! Damn! What do I know? Not much.

I know this. I had fun playing “Joe’s Garage” for you today. I have the ultimate respect for Zappa and his family so it humbles me to finally get his work into this monolith that is the 365. I would love to meet some of the Zappa children or even Gail Zappa. I emulate and admire Frank’s fearlessness, both musically and socially. What a free spirit and amazing expressive artist. I hope you can enjoy the fun I had playing “Joe’s Garage” today. Don’t be a central scrutinizer, folks. Love you.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 233 “Friendship Tips”

Another glamorous Saturday it is, here in Ocean Beach. It is a delight to return to some semblance of normalcy after fun-filled anniversary and wife's birthday celebrations for what seems like ages now. It was fun, but ahhh... Still, things to remain though. I don't mind. We do what we can to manage our duties and balance that with celebrating life. We are quite blessed. I am grateful.

Not everybody gets friendship. I do. It goes well with appreciating, loyalty and a love for giving back and community. Those are overlapping skills. If you have talents in those areas, you are probably excellent at being friends. Now selflessness, kindness, consideration, these attributes are not for everyone. I understand this. It is unfortunate, but that's real. So for anyone, who might not be as naturally inclined to trusting and generosity, here are some helpful hints... or something.

To summarize, friendship is best when we shelve our selfish and greedy impulses and replace them with some humble old-fashioned genuine happiness for everyone around's well-being. Ahh. Feels good like a dip in the ocean or the sea breeze.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals – 233 “Fruits and Vegetables” by Jefferson Jay

Sometimes, we just have to sing. Today was one of those days for me. Sometimes, it is divine inspiration that drives us. Other times, it is we have a 365 deadline or Broadway show we need to sing for. In either case, singing can lift our spirit and give us a fresh perspective on our inspiring afternoons.

Today, I give back to the ground and trees which have shared with us fertile fruits and vegetables for some time now. Thanks ground. Thanks trees. Here, I take to tun, ala musical theater and really dig deep into the layer-lavished onion that is the magical, mystical universe of fruits and veggies. And remember this, my friends, you are what you eat. Do you want to be fruits, vegetables, or meat? God bless you.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers – 232 “Them Belly Full” by Bob Marley

I always have these ideas of these amazing versions of all these tunes I will do when their day comes. I love “Them Belly Full,” like so many other Marley tunes. Is anyone more influential or important as an artist in the 20th century? Miles? Ellington? The Beatles? Maybe not, though? As great as “All You Need is Love Is,” Marley was hammering positive messages home song after song after song. I still feel the inspiration of his passion 36 years after his passing.

I would love to include every signature riff and hit all the proper notes, but when you’re doing something every day, that becomes the most crucial thing. There is a balance between doing something every day and getting it all exactly the way you want. You can’t have both. There are lifetimes worth of incredible things to do each day. We have to choose which parts are key to getting the job done.

I think I had this written a little more clearly moments ago before my dog laid down on the power strip and restarted this all, but in a way, that’s exactly my point. You can dream all you want about how things are going to go, but they go how they go anyway.  If you show up and bring something even close to you best effort every day, you have probably done far more than you realize. It is not about the little things that make everything seem so picturesque. That is garnish. It is about the meaning, the message, and the heart behind it. It is about uncovering and discovering a world of loving happiness. It is about showing up and representing for those who need you, every single day

How many days did Bob Marley not want to sing about injustice, starvation, strife, racism? You don’t think that got old, fighting everybody all the time? I’m sure it did and Bob died young.  Showing up and fighting the fight every day, with whatever weapons you have at your disposal, it means everything.

Hungry for justice, Hungry to contribute, Hungry to be part of the something special, a solution to the greed and hatred that has fooled so many for so long now. So while I wish I played that cool lick that kicks off this great Bob Marley song, hopefully we balance that out, with a consideration of the man and showing up to honor him and ourselves each day.

I still feel like I didn't explain my point as clearly as I wanted to, as clearly as I had before the restart. I guess that's the point. It can't always be how we thought it would be. It can't always be what we want what we expected. Embracing what is. Adjusting and being flexible. That, we can do. Thanks Bob.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals – 232 “The Baby Balance Blues” by Jefferson Jay

Free, peaceful time is one of the life’s most precious gifts. As we get older and responsibilities expand, childhood notions of boredom are replaced with long lists of things to do. When I get a little window of free time, I try to use it to do something creative. It often means my wife has fallen asleep and I am still up. So, yesterday, I grabbed that brass ring and started writing tunes. I wrote a bunch of ‘em, grabbing some old lyrics and putting chords and tempos with the melodies in my mind. I filmed it a little. I have to, otherwise, I struggle to remember some of the machinations of my late night mind.

My wife, sleeping through the final moments of her birthday, awoke. She emerged from the parlor and asked what I was doing. I answered, “Playing guitar?” I sensed she wanted me to go to bed. That’s common. I did. Then I realized she was still very asleep. I got back up and wrote some more. The 365 will not write itself. Ha! Anyway, I hardly remember this tune. It’s a blues I wrote somewhere in the middle of the session. The recording came out. For awhile, before I went to bed for five minutes, the fan was blowing all in the camera, so those songs were written, but those recordings… well, there’s lot of blowing. Bad blowing. Maybe I should name this song that. It IS in B.

Shout out to local legend Hugh Gaskins for inspiring some of the vocal stylings showcased in this late night funfest. Open invitation to anyone to reproduce this note for note on any instrument. I double triple super dare you in fact. Blues, baby.

Ha! I just went back to the lyrics in the book and read them. It appears to be a about the ups and downs and balance in having a baby. I’ve had baby balance on the brain, it certainly seems. So here it is. I typed “Blues, baby” and walked away and came back named the tune the “The Baby Balance Blues.” Not planned by me. By someone much higher up the chain. I didn’t decide. I read.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 232 “The Most Important Thing”

I thought for a moment about using some of the fan-aided words uttered during my late night songwriting sesh last night, but then I decided against it for the meantime. Maybe, a different tomorrow, I will go there. Instead I thought, what if this were the last chance I had to speak to you guys, what would I say? (Alex Rodriguez will play his final game as a New York Yankee later today.) What is the most crucial message that I am compelled to share with you, my friends on the Operation 365? And then, like so often happens in life, things got slightly askew. What is the most important thing? Listen and learn… or watch... or something… August 12. August 12!

Operation 365 2... Blog 231

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals – 231 “Leanne” by Jefferson Jay

What a heaping bunch of celebration. Anniversary, Tuesday. Wife’s birthday, today. Hallelujah! What a bunch of revelry. Here is a love song I wrote for Leanne some time ago. I was going to play it for her at our wedding, but due to a time crunch I cut myself. It’s not as grisly as it sounds. I promise. Instead, I offer it to her here today and her 30th anniversary of life. What a tremendous accomplishment. People don’t necessarily think of things like that when they’re younger, but as we age, we tend to realize each day is an accomplishment, and a year, 365 days surviving and thriving, that is a great achievement indeed. Congrats and I love and every word sang in this song is true. XOXOX. Muah! Smooch!

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers – 231 “Crazy for You” by Madonna

Moved by a recent request at work for old school Madonna, I have been busting these out left and right lately. I am crazy for my wife, Leanne, and it is her birthday, so today, we celebrate her and this Madonna jamboree is right on time to the fiesta. “Crazy for You” is so unlike all the other Madonna hits from back in the day. Cheers to her versatility. I wonder if Madonna is happy. I have no idea what it would be like to be her, obviously, so I couldn’t even venture a guess, but I hope she is. I hope we all is. Yes.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 231 “Drunk on Life and Love”

So, sometimes, I like to get a little silly at my work. Maybe I’ll play my The Noisy, Little, Wooden Thing or whatever it’s called. Sometimes, I sing silly songs about food or just go all in on a performance and make sure we’re all having a fun time. It works pretty well, and everybody gets that I am playing aroundand entertaining. Until today, well…  she was probably joking too.

I heard a distant voice from the back of the large room say something. I thought I heard what, but wasn’t positive so I issued a hefty New Jersey, “Hehhhh?” in reply. She repeated the question, “Are you drunk?” Ha! Haven’t been asked that before. Enjoy my answer. Enjoy life. That’s the whole point.

Operation 365 2... Blog 230

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers – 230 “Baby, You’re a Rich Man” by The Beatles

So, “Baby, You’re a Rich Man” is a beautiful and inspiring song about how wonderfully well-off we all are. I wrote a song with a similar theme recently called, “This Is How Kings Live.” I posted it last week. I had some fun playing it for the rich, special people whose time I get to share a few days a week. A strange thing occurred at about the 1.51 mark. Right before, I sang the line, “you keep all your money in a big brown bag, inside a zoo.” At about that same moment, this version of this tune sounds like it jumped into “a big brown bag, inside a zoo.” What a thing to do, video.

I could have just scrapped it for that, but I decided against it. It was just on the acceptable side of OK, by my humble standards, so… dig it. Open Mic is tonight. Winston’s, 6 to 9. Love to see you if you’re local. Otherwise, we will celebrate on behalf of all the brothers and sisters worldwide. Peace.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals – 230 “Anniversary One” by Jefferson Jay

Yesterday was my second anniversary. It was a very lovely one. Last year, on our anniversary, I wrote this song for my wife, Leanne, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean from our Atlantic City hotel room. It's a personal, touching little song. It is through the magic of the 365 that it becomes public, but that's OK. The world could use as much positivity as possible. Here's some more, world. Love you everyone. Hang in there.

Honey, wife face, sweetheart, I love you. Here's your first anniversary song.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 230 “I Like Everybody”

One of my favorite things about working with the special needs population is the incredible and positive attitudes they bring with them every single day. It is inspiring and awesome. I dare anyone to try to have my job and be grumpy at work for any period of time. You’d have to be going through some really rough stuff, for that to be the case. Don’t get me wrong. A lot of people I work with have very difficult jobs, I respect them so much, but most of them, at least the ones that last, manage to muster genuine smiles far more often than not.

The people I work with are appreciative and kind. They are humble, yet much more capable of clearly stating their positive traits without feeling the embarrassment or trepidation so many of us feel when complimenting ourselves. I find it refreshing. I was complimenting a person today on always having a great spirit and he answered, “ I know I do.” He is not bragging. He is just stating the truth. So often, my friends feel compelled to say “in my opinion,” and qualifiers of that nature. We are conditioned to hedge our thoughts or to cloak them in softening comments for fear of offending anyone. Who could blame people? So many these days are quick to cry and complain about so much. I think it is sad and I am glad that the folks I work with aren’t inhibited in that manner. It is healthy for people to feel positively about their good traits.

Steps beyond that lives… liking everyone. I don’t have the time or patience to explain why that is prudent to everyone, but they know it and I do too. And I feel so blessed to know both them and that. Think about it if you want to. If you don’t get it, it may be worth your thought time. XOXO It’s up to you.
