Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 128 “Down Under” by Men at Work

“Down Under” is one of the all-time classics form the 80s. How I haven’t already done it in 493 (including both 365s) is a mystery that will forever remain unsolved. It seems like just yesterday that I was a child at UMASS watching Knuckle Sandwich cover this jam at some house party. A glorious Saturday to all. Happy 70th birthday to Claudia. We are looking forward to going and celebrating with her in a bit and then we get to go to our favorite place, The Hunseys. It’s going to be a funky good time.

Operation  365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 128 “In a Circle, I Sing” by Jefferson Jay

I wrote this song, who knows when, awhile ago. The lyrics might have even come from longer back, but I don’t remember. Until a few minutes ago, this song was called "The Circle of Life." I never saw the Lion King. I know. I’m like the only one who hasn’t in the world. I asked my wife, Leanne, “The Circle of Life” is a song from "The Lion King" right. She immediately started chanting and parading our little dog Nigel around above her head like some de facto Jungle King. I changed the name of the song in my head that instant.  I mean we can share song names, but for some tunes you just got to have respect. Someone should tell that to Bruno Mars. I think he must have missed that day in song naming class

Last night was the final show of this Springs’ Acoustic Evenings at the Athenaeum Series. It was indeed a lovely affair. Much love and many good feelings. Huge thanks to everyone who played or attended this Springs’ series. It is always very rewarding making memories that come with such special sensations. Love. Before you know it will be fall and we’ll do it all again. I love this life.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 128 “Get Yourself One of These”

Folks, there’s a lot of words to say and a lot of advice to give, but some days that shit just doesn’t sit on the tip of your tongue. When this happens to me I hit record and let ‘er fly. Every once in awhile, the universe smiles on you and you slip and/or step into some quality wisdom. Today is one of those days. So be like me, here today folks, and get yourself one of these. You’ll never regret it. It’s the gift that lasts a lifetime. Love.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 127 “My Girl” by The Temptations

Here is another number from my performing group’s performance at the El Cajon Public Library on April 9, 2016. I am so proud of them. They play great and handle themselves like professionals any time we go anywhere. It is a delight that enhances my existence immeasurably, being involved with Charlie, Bryce and Chelse. They love to play and it shows. Here they are, giving “My Girl” the love it deserves.

Beware: this video has the power to make you very happy. Watch carefully.

Operation  365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 127 “In Utero (The Things I Ought Be Doing in My Mind)” by Jefferson Jay

It looks like I wrote this one in January 2014. All the dates between the two 365s kind of mush together for me creatively. This one is interesting. It was written from the perspective of a baby that is still in utero. That’s why I felt so fine borrowing Nirvana’s album name for this tune. Mine is actually about a whipper-snapper in utero. I threw the parenthesis things on there out respect to Cobain and Co. though.

Apparently these are the types of tunes you write when you get to this age, songs about babies and having them and the different angles on that and things. I hadn’t played this song for awhile. It was fun. I actually changed it a little, so that’s a cool benefit of this whole thing, old song improvement. Life improvement, in general, I suppose.

Tonight, April 29, 2016, is the final show of this Springs’ Acoustic Evenings at the Athenaeum Series. It will be lovely. Excited to share an evening of entertainment in the old library with Hugh Gaskins, Nancy Truesdail and my soon-to-be newest friend, Tolan Shaw. Peace.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 127 “Staring Down Love”

I’m under the impression that some of you out there could use a pick me up. I’ve tried a million ways with a million words in this segment it seems so today I’ve decided to come with something a little different. Call it telepathy, an attempt at psychic communication if you will. The internet’s is loaded with theories about transmitting energy with the eyes. Here I am sharing the love, quite explicitly through my shiny blue orbs. Dig in and feel the love. Words are great but we don’t always need words to speak.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 126 “5000 Candles in the Wind” by Andy Dwyer and April Ludgate

Getting a wee tad 365 weary this afternoon, but I shall push on through. Had a meeting with the great Shantih Beeman of Nice Chops after work in gorgeous University Heights. Then I came home to do my videos. I watched them. They were eh, especially my big “5000 Candles in the Wind,” I’d been waiting all week for. So what do ya do?

I dressed up like a cowboy and got ‘er done. I got a letter from the state tax folks that threatened to derail but, not, I’ve got to push on through. My man, Bob Marley. NFL draft starts in 17 minutes. Go Cowboys.. Go away concussions. I am divided on this issue, immensely.

Speaking of popular NBC television programs, here it is folks, a sweet sweet swansong for a miniature horse named L’il Sebastian. The pride of Pawnee, with a pony package to match, he’s dearly missed. May we sing this song and remember the huge impact he had on us all. My favorite part of “Parks and Rec” so far. Thanks Chris Pratt. Thanks Amy Poehler. Thanks Netflix. The Internet says Andy Dwyer and April Ludgate wrote this tune. I kind of like that and I’ll be sticking with it. Whoever wrote this tune done good. Just the right balance of silly and sentimental. Two heartfelt thumbs up.

Operation  365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 126 “What Are You Doing” by Jefferson Jay

I wrote this one last night and it doesn’t have a name for it yet. Hmmm… Guess I better conjure one quick. I toyed with “Monsanto, God Bless,” but I’m afraid irony will be outweighed by the shadowy darkness the corporate name conjures. The song may be too nice for that. It’s optimistic, but there’s probably more blatantly optimistic things to call it other than “Monsanto, God Bless.” I’ll think on that a moment. Maybe something with “Roger Rabbit” in it?

OK. I read the lyrics a few times, listened to it a few times too. There’s a lot of questions in this tune, so I’m going to name it, “What Are You Doing.” In a way I think the other title is more indicative of what the song really means. People are hiding, burying themselves in media and madness, like movies from 30 years ago, just to state one example. I wrote the last line first and I didn’t know what it meant, “Are you looking over where the corn patch fleed?” Well, why did it flee, it begs the question? Big bad scary GMO seeds, maybe? I don’t know. “What Are You Doing” looks into a little of the who, where, whens, whats and whys of all these things.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 126 “A Secret Truth About Myself”

Enjoy this anecdote with long pauses for thought disguised as a truly shocking bombshell revelation. No, just kidding, this is a doozy. You definitely don’t wanna miss this one. Let’s get personal, folks. This is shit from which the earth shakes. Heavy. Duty. Rock and roll

Operation  365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 125 “Seize the Day” by Jefferson Jay

“Seize the Day” is the penultimate number from my last batch of 24 tunes I wrote at once. It is the one and only bunch of 24 jams I wrote in 24 hours. 24 tunes in 24 hours. Not too shabby. I’m getting gamed up to do it again.

I was on the edge of doing it last night, but these types of long form creative expressions can be borderline impossible with a wife wandering around awake. They just don’t like husbands being that focused on something else for that long. I’ll correct myself. I shouldn’t speak for everyone, but it takes a lot of attention to write tons of tunes quick, and wives prefer that attention land on them, at least mine does. Don’t get me wrong. I much prefer that to having a wife who didn’t care at all about what I did. I am not complaining. In fact, I am thrilled.

Instead, I wrote a concept of sorts, for a 12-song story and I wrote and recorded a pretty cool riff. I’m more a chord dude than a riff guy…

So, I’m powering through the second 12 of the 24 that day and my dear pal, Kip stopped by. He pitched in some lyrics so he gets a songwriting credit for this jam too. I’m feeling fired up for Open Mic tonight. Open Mic is an amazing thing for a community, at least mine is. I insist. Kip is the star of the best Open Mic story ever, and there are many. Two Novembers ago. I was hanging with him on his birthday. It was mellow to say the least. We did nothing. It was fine.

Two days later, Kip, also the keyboardist for my Jefferson Jay Band, stopped in to my Open Mic to say hey. I told him I’d go schmoozer whatever lady in the bar he wanted on his behalf. I’m married. I don’t care. I have nothing to lose. He declined. I did not relent. I pestered him to tell me who he thought was hot. He cracked and told me. When he tried to stop me from approaching her and her two pals, I said, “Get out of my way.” He is much bigger than me, but he listened.

I went and schmoozed. I could tell right away they were Brazilian. I learned a word or two during my past life, working at Portugalia, a Portuguese restaurant up the street. I broke the ice, introduced Kip shortly thereafter. Two days later she moved in with him. Eleven months later, they were wed.

Open Mic is important. So is seizing the day.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 125 “It Never Rains in Southern California” by Albert Hammond

My “5000 Candles in the Wind” cover is coming along pretty nicely at this point. I may even have the winner in the can. That means done, but I am not ready to end this era so quickly. I play these songs with a purpose until I cover them and then they fade to the periphery with the rest of everybody else’s tunes. I am still too tickled and heart-warmed by this beautiful ballad of L’il Sebastian to slam the door that quickly.

Fortunately, an unfulfilled request, surfaced in my brain and I had much fun playing “It Never Rains in Southern California” by Albert Hammond, a song I didn’t know before. I know some songs from 1972, but not nearly as many as I would have, had I been alive. Hail my man, Dan Truesdail. One better, hail all Truesdails everywhere. Hail Truth.

Operation  365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 125 “Follow Very Closely”

So I tried out my cover of “It Never Rains in Southern California” by Albert Hammond on the senior citizen special needs adults I do music with on Wednesday. This video begins with them telling me I did a nice job. They knew the tune much better than I did. After, one of my friendly pals suggested I sing "Maxwell's Silver Hammer," which I offered in this very project some weeks back, after similar requests from this fellow.

He said "Maxwell's Silver Hammer," and I said "Maxwell's Silver Hammer What?," encouraging him to ask me, instead of just giving me the ol' jukebox treatment. Somehow seconds later, I lost track of the conversation when he started talking about being "alone with a test tube." Stay with it, kid. You got this.

Speaking of following closely, thank God I wasn't following too closely just before this class, because some sillyhead practically stopped in the middle of the road right in front of me and I had to slam on the brakes and swerve to not smash 'em. Thank God indeed.

Operation  365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 124 “Love That Face” by Jefferson Jay

I’m extremely grateful. I feel blessed beyond humble, just so glad to get to participate in this great life each day. Perhaps it seems absurd to some to be so joy-filled in a world with so much suffering. But to me that’s the whole point, if you can’t celebrate when things are great (or when you’re just not suffering for you half-empty types), then in a way you’re always suffering, wishing things were better when they’re perfectly fine already. Greed is not realizing that you already have everything you need.

Those who are suffering need the rest of this to lift them up and provide and example of a meaningful and fulfilling life. It is there. There is love to be shared always.

My job provides regular reminders to me, of all the different challenges people can smile and laugh through, al the different ways to appreciate when you could easily complain. Perspective. Is the light at the end of the tunnel. It is the pot of gold at then end of the rainbow. If you have it, you have all.

I was playing “Love That Face” when some of the special needs adults I work with arrived for their afternoon class. They got it. Huge smiles, laughing, joy, some of it you can hear seeping into the microphone. It is life-affirming, rewarding and then some.

I even played it twice to milk the moment, basking, professionally. When I did my most recent chunk of 24 tunes at once ”Love That Face” was number 24, the ol’ last but not least thing. I knew this was a touching one when I wrote it. We’ve got to love our own face, love ourselves. That is the first step to healing our world and then the world we share with others, with love.

I am serious.

I love you. There’s plenty of love to love everyone on the planet. Even strangers, or as I prefer to call them friends you haven’t met yet. It’s not like to you have to BE IN LOVE with everyone, just more like genuinely and passionately wishing everyone the best. It’s a quest and test, a challenge for our chest. Nothing more and nothing less.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 124 “Lovely Rita” by The Beatles

I built myself a pretty strong, swift affection for a tune called “5000 Candles in the Wind” last night. I don’t watch much actual TV, but I dabble in the Netflix on occasion for some relaxation and a late night ha-ha, I’ve enjoyed recently is “Parks and Recreation.” I know its old but I’ve never seen it before so it is new to me.

In an episode I enjoyed while managing the mass of data that is this here 365 2, a touching tribute was shared to a beloved member of their Pawnee community, L’il Sebastian. I will play this song. I just love it so much that I am compelled to do it as well as I possibly can. That, I assure you, is a slippery slope. Just try to something and you will get it done. Try to do something great, and prepare to be trying for awhile. It’s not a mindset conducive to making great art. Haha. I’ll manage… tomorrow.

For today, I play this Beatles classic I’d never played before this morning. Enjoy “Lovely Rita.” Hail Sgt. Pepper.

Operation  365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 124 “A Day of Love”

Shouldn’t every day be a day of love. I believe so. It is our only hope and it is the only way, so today we extrapolated on that just slightly. It’s a simple point, There’s no reason to make it too ornate. A plain an honest massage from me to you.

I  love you.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 123 “Rock and Roll Girls” by John Fogerty

I’m trying to get a day ahead in my mind on the covers. “Rock and Roll Girls” did me a favor by popping in my head last night before I went to bed. It was fun pulling up the old video for this jam and learning it today. Nice tune.

“Rock and Roll Girls” was on John Fogerty’s 1985 album “Centerfield.” There were many cool tunes on it in heavy rotation on MTV, back when that was important. Fogerty got sued by an old label, who claimed John Fogerty’s new tune, “The Old Man Down the Road” sounded too much like John Fogerty’s old tune, “Run Through the Jungle.” They said they owned the rights to the old tune and therefore, he ripped them off.

Silliness. Glad Fogerty won. He even set a Supreme Court precedent in 1993 by getting the folks who sued him to pay his legal fees. I’m glad we have the right to play songs that sound like ourselves. Fogerty played all the instruments on this record too. That’s awesome.

Hail Fogerty! What the heck. Hail all Johns!

Operation  365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 123 “Flip the Script (to a Brighter Tomorrow)” by Jefferson Jay

Day 123 is a fun one on the 365. There is something very reassuring and soothing about the elementary nature of the number. It’s like That Jackson 5 jam, “ABC,” of the Seuss book. Perhaps subconsciously this song, I wrote this morning turns the page ideologically to a simpler time. First grade, maybe. Second. However old Michael Jackson was when he was cranking out those first hits with his brothers. Back then, we teach children basic ways to live in the world. Be kind. Share. Love. We teach them how to make friends. Not to hit. Be nice to animals. Play well with others. Honestly that’s the same advice the adults who rule the world need to take now. All of us do, actually.

It’s no magic trick. There’s plenty of ways to make the world OK. We have plenty of everything. Some folks just aren’t ready to share yet. We leave our room, the Earth, a shambles, but we don’t need to do that. We can change the way and care for our space, our home.

I had intended to make up a tune from scratch for you today. I am trying to warm up that skill. I started playing what would become the initial chords to this tune. I realized I liked it a bit more than my average progression, so I set about writing some lyrics and another part or two. It took about a half and hour. Then a played it in a couple of keys and finally, I sped it up. Then it was a bit more snappy and dance-y, a bit less weepy and melancholy.  A nice song, either way.

When I was done, I named it “Flip the Script (to a Brighter Tomorrow) ‘cause that’s what its’ about essentially. Like what Bernie Sanders is trying to do for politics, we need to make the world one we are less ashamed of. We need to make ourselves this way. We can. It is simpler than it sounds. We must embrace change. We must walk toward the light. It’s not a magic trick. It’s far from impossible. It’s remembering, remembering what we teach our children, and then rebuilding our world in that image, one open heart, body, mind… soul, at a time.

It is believing this can be and making it happen each day. It’s not rocket science and even if it was, people can do that, so I know we can do this.

Operation  365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 123 “Buddy Film”

I always thought it would be cool to be in a buddy film, like "Rush Hour" or Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal in "Running Scared,"a male Thelma and Louise, if you will. The trick to a great buddy pic is chemistry and there's no smoother running buddy for me, these days, than my pooch cohort, Nigel.

So here we are, in a trailer, of sorts, palling around, kissing a little... Hey, if I'm going to down this well-tread road, I';m going to have to do it a little different. somehow. Imagine the possibilities.

Thanks to Apple for the "Peach Cobbler."

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 122 “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley

Hello All. A glorious Sunday to ya. It’s an especially warm one today because it is gig day for The JJB, my preferred acronym for our very own Jefferson Jay Band. Today, we take the stage at Mother’s Saloon, 4-8 PM, 2228 Bacon St, San Diego, California. Ocean, Beach. It’s a lovely life to live and it’s a lovely place to play.

I was computer-spelunking in search of a cool cover song to play for you today and how happy was I when I realized “Three Little Birds” had not been played yet. Yes, many Bob Marley tunes have made their way into this ginormous project, but somehow this one was saved for today. Yet another blessing.

I like to assume everybody loved this song. How about that Bob Marley, fighting for freedom, making music. That’s a guy whose career speaks to me. I understand his motivations and they are blatantly admirable and for the good of those with whom his world was shared. I love stuff like that. Hail Bob Marley. Every day.

Operation  365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 122 “Coming in for the Kisses”

Blessings abound. Hail everywhere. Bathe in the positive feelings. “Coming in for the Kisses.” I hit record. Living the dream indeed. God bless.

Operation  365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 122 “A Song About Shuffleboard” by Jefferson Jay

So, some years back I met a good friend of my wife’s named Catherine Chengery. Very quickly, we became buds as well. The first time we met, I believe, we all went to Mother’s Saloon for a beverage, the same bar we happen to playing today from 4-8. 2228 Bacon St. 92107 if youwanna get down. We played shuffleboard. It was fun and provocative.

Then, as my hazy recollection recalls, we went back to Leanne’s and the two of them ran off in search of some burgers for us to dine on. I think they got Hodad’s. Before they walked out the door, Catherine suggested I wrote a song while they were gone. I did this and here it is. I will check my meticulous records now. My machine says I first typed these words on Feb 13, 2012. Well, I probably wrote this song around then then.

In summation, the chorus of this song applies to a lot more than everyone’s favorite bar game. It says

“It’s so easy to overshoot
You need to keep it cool and let it glide right
It’s so easy to overshoot
You need to keep it cool and get it right”

Like so many other things, this applies to almost everything. If you like someone… If you have a new job… If you want to do well at whatever you’re doing… There’s some wisdom here. Let me know if you figure out how it relates to you. I’m still learning what it means too.

Operation 365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 121 “Vincent” by Don McLean

I have loved this “Vincent” song as long as I can remember. Maybe I found it on my Mom’s “American Pie” album. Maybe it was a tape I got of Don McLean’s Greatest Hits, because I loved “American Pie”. I don’t know. This song has been in my conscience for a long time. What a beautiful tribute to one of the only fine artists whose work I get at all. It is no slight on them. Some stuff is just more relatable to one person than another. Visiting The Metropolitan Museum of Art some weeks back, once again Van Gogh’s work spoke to in a way that far transcended most of the other historic work hanging everywhere.

For awhile, I played and booked  a little music at a since shut-down sushi joint called Kirin Sushi. The owner was named Yoshi. She loved this tune and would always ask me to play it. It is one of the many fond memories I have from that brief era. Eating Chinese food with the staff, sushi for music, bring Don Truesdail in, and eating a meal with Alan Silva while a brawl broke out, these are the memories that have stood this test of time from those fleeting moments. “Vincent” brings it all back. It’s nice how songs do that.

Speaking of, last night was another unforgettable edition at my Acoustic Evenings at the Athenaeum showcase. Our acts shared the stage and  much great music from yesteryear in an intimate and highly engaged environment. Huge thanks tour performers: Guiro Grass (Travis Oliver and The Soul Man), Trails and Rails (Paula, Walt and Mike), and Eve Selis and Mark Intravaia.

It was incredible night of music. Eve shared some terrific tunes from her upcoming CD “See Me With Your Heart.” There are some great tunes on it, including the title track. She raised a lot of dough (25K) on Kickstarter to pay for this project and it is great to see an artist receive that kind of financial backing from her supporters. The musical portion of the evening ended with a transcendent version of “Hallelujah.” It was a pleasure and privilege to share the stage with Eve, Mark, and Trails and Rails for the show’s final act. Exhilarating and gratifying, it was. Our final show for the Spring 2016 series is next Friday, April 29, 2016 at 7:30PM. The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library is located at 1008 Wall Street, La Jolla, CA 92037. It’s a special place to enjoy music.

Operation  365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 121 “First Night” by Jefferson Jay

Some of you make know and many people to do know this, I’ve been busting out big batches of tunes to meet the musical mandate of this here 365. So I already posted my first experiment with this technique, 12 tunes I wrote at once that I later labeled, “Welcome.”

Then I did 24 at once. I didn’t give them a name. I finished posting most of those. And now I am beginning to unearth the sketch that the most recent (and 3rd) mass songwriting experiment, another 24 –tune chunk.

One of the interesting things that come with writing a bunch of tunes at once in a fast-paced (so it doesn’t take months) way, is you write a lot of things that you have no idea what they mean or why you wrote them. It is sort of fun do dive into the web and roll around after the fact and try, to figure out what the f you were talking about. “First Night” is a perfect example of that.

So, one of the things I did to try to change up the 1st set of 24 I did from the 2nd set of 24 was I assigned an hour to each tune in the 2nd set. I figured there are 24 hours in a day, 24 tunes… that made for two in every major key. Next time I do this, if I ever do again, I will write one in each key, major and minor. Anyway, I also figured that could guide me a little bit in my word selection. Every bit of inspiration adds to the delicious soup, the musical soup.

So “First Night” is the 4th tune, the 4 in the morning tune. Somehow I found myself writing a tune from the perspective of a baby who was being born and didn’t know anything about the world around him. Hence the chorus, “I’ve never ever got up before.” For some reason later in the tune I decided to include this detail, “Fresh out they named me Vince.” Now I don’t really know anybody named Vince at this point in my life and I haven’t known more than a couple of Vinces personally, ever. So, when I played “Vincent” by Don McLean earlier today, this tune naturally popped in my head and now you’ve read the longest story ever about how that happened. Thanking you for your interest in our Operation 365 2.

Operation  365 2 - Jefferson Jay - Words - 121 “This Great Piece of Cinema”

I thought long and hard about what I should name “This Great Piece of Cinema.” Honestly, if I spent half the time deciding what I was going to say and trying to make it interesting that I do deciding what clever name to give it might be an even greater piece of cinema. Who’s to say? God bless subjectivity. It is all but all-encompassing.

So, other names considered, but ultimately unchosen included, “The Brothers Karamazov,” “JJ Reads the Classics,” “Russian Lit,” “Dostoevsky,” and “Don’tstoevsky.” That last one was Leanne’s. Maybe I should have gone with that one. It’s not too late. It’s never too late.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Originals – 120 “Treat in Your Mind” by Jefferson Jay

So once I again I conjured a tune for your coolsters here in 365 city. Unlike yesterday’s creation, I made up the music for this one before I hit record. My pal, Dan, suggested, I dedicate the song to “Rice.” So I sang, “Mmmm, Rice.” I even strapped a metal bowl to my head. I’m not sure why.

I did a couple of other versions after. This was the fastest one. And I went with it. I tried a bridge ‘cause I was all feelin’ it. The bridge came out OK, I guess. I hope you like my jam. Maybe I’ll use “Mmmm, Rice” as today’s “Words” bit.

Operation 365 2– Jefferson Jay – Covers – 120  “We’re Not Gonna Take It” by Twisted Sister

It’s getting tougher to come up with covers I haven’t done yet. On one level, I know there’s hundred of Beatles, Led Zeppelin and other huge bands’ tune I haven’t done, not to mention countless one-hit wonders, but 500 tunes into 365ing, ya gotta dig a little deeper.

“We’re Not Gonna Take It” is way deep. I remember buying the cassette, “Stay Hungry” at Record World at Garden State Plaza Mall. The video was epic, especially to a 12-year old boy. When I started playing guitar and chords became available on the Internet, “We’re Not Gonna Take It” was one of the first tunes I grabbed. It’s amazing me it’s taken til now to share. Sharing… it’s caring, yo.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Words – 120 “The Making of “Mmmm, Rice”+””

The amount of effort and silliness that went into recording this tune made me feel compelled to share it. Who’s to say rice doesn’t deserve a love song. Here’s swearing it does. Thanks to Dan Ratcliffe for the ricey inspiration.

Operation 365 2– Jefferson Jay – Covers – 119  “The Ballad of Gilligan’s Isle” by Sherwood Schwartz and George Wyle

So Prince died today. Condolences to the entire state of Minnesota, particularly the Twin Cities. If anyone else of that musical ilk had died, I’d likely tribute them with a cover of one of their fine tunes today. Alas, Prince was unlike all others. By that, I mean, he was the only guy who refused to let artists like myself play his tunes on YouTube. No need to bash the dud on the day he died, but when I played “Cream” during the first 365, I got threatening lawyer-led emails and the video was pulled down. They said if I did it again, they could shut down my entire channel and pull all my videos down. So, “Cream” is only video from the first 365, not still available here on the web.

So in lieu, of the awesome version of “Purple Rain” that I would loved to provide today, I offer instead by Gorillaz-inspired take on the Gilligan’s Island Theme Song, which I just learned is officially called “The Ballad of Gilligan’s Isle.” I was feeling alright about this take on the tune until I was stricken near the song’s climax with a harrowing bout of “Glasses Skiing.” Folks, please protect your children. Wear contacts of you have. This can happen to you too. Don’t let your rendition “The Ballad of Gilligan’s Isle” suffer in the way that so many of ours have for so long. Thank you.

Folks, there is a very serious social circumstance that is affecting so many today. This, quite clearly, is glasses skiing. Although the confluence of traits that brings forth this dreaded condition is quite rare, it is extremely alarming, especially to those of is who suffer through this every sweaty day. Please watch this video and reach deep into your hearts and give to whatever charities are working day and night to battle this debilitating disorder. Thank you.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Originals – 119 “Ya Gotta Love the View” by Jefferson Jay

So, I made this up for ya today. Got a little crazy. Improvised some. You get the drift. I considered a few names, most notably “Mama Nina” but ultimately settled on whatever I said last essentially. It should be stated for the record that this tune is in no way shape or form, related to or inspired by the ABC weekday yenta-schmooze of the same name. They’ve said you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Fine, but I think it’s those last impressions, those ones that linger, that really pack the most punch. This tune is punchy, and I hope you love it as much as I love you.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Words – 118 “Have Gas”

So far, this has been the toughest week of the 365, hands down, and it’s only Wednesday. Don’t get me wrong. Life is great, but car repairs aren’t. Neither are paying taxes that you can’t afford. Now I know better than to get too down about anything money-related, but it a bit of a kick in the knobber when you do all you can to come up and things like this, kick you back down. Well, that is all the pity-party I plan to be having in this here 365. No one wants to read that, because it is no fun, including me.

I now aim to set things straight and think positive thoughts post-haste. It’s the only way. No sense crying over spilt milk or blown fuel pumps, because you ran out of gas, again. You’re much better off putting that behind you, doing better next time, and enjoying the rest of your day/life. Well, those are my thoughts, but it is really up to you.

Operation 365 2– Jefferson Jay – Covers – 118 “Octopus’s Garden” by The Beatles

In an attempt to inject some much-needed positivity and good feelings into my mood, I am going bring you another performance from my friends I work with at St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center a couple weeks back. My three musical friends, Chelse, Charlie, and Bryce, from L to R, bring you their stellar rendition of “Octopus’s Garden” by the Beatles. If this doesn’t warm your heart, please call 911 or get the first available appointment with any cardiologist you can find.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Originals – 118 “The No Car Blues” by Jefferson Jay

Singing the blues can be extremely helpful in terms of processing unpleasant thoughts efficiently. So, in an attempt to meet my quota here today, that’s exactly what I did. To brighter tomorrows… drink.

In other news, Happy 4/20, to those of you who celebrate such things. Happy Birthday to my dear departed friend, Mike Warrington. I am still working on "Am I Inside?" and "Love Hate Love" by Alice in Chains for you. I feel like I've got to get them good and they're not so easy to play and sing for me at this time. I'll just keep practicing them, until they're worthy of a tribute to you. Thanks for everything. Onward and upward, my friend.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Covers – 117 “Oh Well” by Fleetwood Mac

Hello. Here is one of the many jams I was exposed to as a youth by my main man, Chris Scelzo. He was a year older but ages older in experience. He’d play classic rock tunes on an acoustic guitar and we’d sit around and sing along or listen. I loved those days. They were simple times and I had never enjoyed the poetry of sitting in a circle with guitars and singing.

Other times, we’d drive around in his Hyundais. Diners, Delaware, wherever we felt like heading, we would go. He would educate me on the 70s music. I learned quickly to love deep cuts from Fleetwood Mac, Bob Welsh, Mott the Hoople, The Kinks, and several others. This was one and finally, all these years later, I can play it. And now I did. For you.

I think I wrote “119” instead of “117” on the curtain credits screen. Oh Well.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Words– 117 “You Like Elvis?”

One of my favorite special friends at my work has a triumvirate of requests she makes each time she sees me. They go like this, “Elvis… Baseball… YMCA…” She sings along as best she can, usually on the choruses. “Baseball” means “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” She sings the “1,2,3” part. It is good clean fun.

So this time, when she made her request, we joked a little. She pointed her finger and told me she just got into Elvis today. Good times. Hail her. Hail everyone. Always.

Operation 365 2– Jefferson Jay – Originals – 117 “Meant to Be” by Jefferson Jay

“Meant to Be” is one of the last lingering ones from that first batch of 24 tunes I wrote at once, a month or so ago now. Here, I played it twice (well, once-and-a-half, really). First I played it slow, just to try it out, and then I played it at the faster speed I wrote it at. I flipped the order of the performances for this video.

Let me know which you like better if you care to cast a vote. We took a poll of the special needs folks in the room and there were votes for both versions. Like the New York primary, for which folks are voting as we speak, the final verdict remains unknown. Go Bernie!

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Covers – 116 “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears

Today’s topic unwittingly became the follies of youth. Youth, in this context is in now way reserved for only the young. There are many wise, old, souls, as there are many children who never grow up. Theoretically as we age or mature, we realize we are not the only reason everything exists in the world. We stop treating others that way and and stop expecting others to treat us that way. We claim additional responsibilities and take pride in keeping our word and getting things done. Like, I said, it isn’t for everyone, but whatever it is, it can take lifetimes to learn. Anyone with wisdom is always growing, listening and learning.

These standards are not expected of children or even young adults, See pop culture phenomena, Bieber, Justin and Manziel, Johnny, adult children. It must be harder to grow when fame and fortune are in your pocket and everyone tells you how heart you are all the time. For some, this is the challenge like offers, For others, it is a more common undergraduate experience, or community college, or a harsh splashdown into the work world right out of high school. Thank God forgiveness is as big a part of our world as it is. The only way to really learn is to fall on your face and get up. We all make mistakes. There’s a more immediate hope for those who learn from them.

The goal of life is not fame or fortune. It never was. This is an illusion sold to us on the big screen in 3D on all 600 channels, even the radio, terrestrial, satellite, whatever… Having a good soul, treating people kindly, being generous with your energy, your time, and whatever else you’ve gathered. Lifting others up is why we’re here. Everything is preening and parading on the catwalk. Looks fade. Love lives forever.

Do you want to rule the world? Do you really?

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Words– 116 “This is Mbuku”

The words segment of 365 Town is making me more aware of my identity crisis. I might actually be schizophrenic. Either way, I’m glad it’s getting out. Can’t be jamming ten men in to one’s man’s bones. Tissue notwithstanding, muscles as well, of course, a man needs to spread his wings some and fly. I’m flying to Africa. I’m a new man today. I’m never turning back. Ubuntu in the house.

Operation 365 2– Jefferson Jay – Originals – 116 “The Edginess of Youth”

One day a few years ago, I went to a college football game with my special lady. If you’ve ever been to one of these especially, here in San Diego, you know they are exceptionally boring. I’ve never seen a close one. Maybe they’re better. Regardless, I was at one of these because my friend Blair produces the KGB Sky Show, an awesome fireworks and rock n’ roll extravaganza, which begins immediately following the game.

So I’m killing time, jotting in my notebook. It felt like hours. The game refused to end. Also mind-numbing and endless was the chatter emanating from the undergraduate children a few rows back. Thankfully, years later, I’ve forgotten the specific nonsense spouted, but it was maddening. Songwriting coping mechanism #646 kicked it and the next thing you know, I had a tune and it was time for explosions. That was the year I learned to bring earplugs to the KGB Sky Show. We all have a lot to learn and like my man, Happy Bear loves to say, “We are all perfectly fine.” It can be both. I love this life.

Operation 365 2– Jefferson Jay – Originals – 115 “Theth Thmith: A Lisper’s Nightmare”

So one thing some folks don’t know about me is, I love baseball. I follow the football and the basketball too, but no one of my affection for those sports touches my love for baseball. It’s part of America to me, and one of the best parts. This is ironic because one of the worst parts of baseball resides right here in my hometown, The San Diego Padres. The Padres suck and they’ve never done shit. It’s embarrassing. Their games are miserable to sit through, especially if you love baseball like I do, because they can’t do a damn thing on the field. It’s been this way for some time now, unfortunately. They’ve already set a record for offensive futility just two weeks into this baseball season,, being shutout five times in their first ten games. Disgraceful.

Worse still the Padres did not even try to put a wining team on the field this year. They traded away a bunch of their best players and replaced them with nothing. Nice strategy, Pads. Why is there even a team named “Padres.” First of all, it’s a Spanish word and no other team in any sports that I can think of are named in Spanish in this country. Second, it’s a religious. Name. Bring me The Brooklyn Rabbis and I’ll be OK with it, but until them, it’s just dumb stacked on dumb stacked in stupid… In my humble opinion.

Worse, OK. A couple years ago they were so bad that the entire team was hitting .221 in June. Around that time, I became a regular guest on The Mighty 1090’s, (San Diego’s Sports Leader, Talk Radio 1090AM) The Scott and BR Show. Scott Kaplan is a radio and TV personality and Billy Ray Smith is a San Diego Charger legend. Both of these men have been very nice to me and I have enjoyed being on their show about a dozen times at this point, years later.

My bit, on their show, is a I write and sing silly, satirical, and/or stinging songs at the expense of our local whipping boys, the Padres and the Chargers. Thanks for your commitment to sucking, guys. This tune, “Theth Thmith: A Lisper’s Nightmare,” was one that never made it on to the air. During their pathetic wheezing at the plate in 2014, I wrote this tune about the only hitter they had who wasn’t humiliating our National Past time each game, Seth Smith. Unfortunately, they tossed Seth after the season and this song has never seen the light of day ‘til now. When your team blows, (not my team, GO YANKS!) “Theth Thmith: A Lisper’s Nightmare” may well be the most clever of all the songs I wrote for Scott and BR, but here it is years later, for you, now, Enjoy! Lisper Pride!

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Covers – 115 “Talkin’ Baseball” by Terry Cashman

May the baseball bash rage on. Love me some hardball. Years back, I bought www.terrycashman.com because I loved this tune so much. Still do. It even brought tears to my eyes on Opening Day 2015 at Petco Park. Still mourning the loss of the great Jerry Coleman that day, this song transported, and still takes, me to a simpler time, where the majesty of it all is palpable and touching. What a great job by Terry Cashman writing “Talkin’ Basbeall.” I thin I want to write a “Talkin’ baseball type song for Bernie Sanders, a tune that eloquently sums up all the reasons something is so great while staying catchy and whimsical. I love it.

Cheers to Terry Cashman. Thanks for writing this tune. If you want your domain name, hit me up. I guarantee we could work something out. Then again, if you cared about stuff like that. I’d have heard from you already, most likely. Lots of love and thanks for all the summer time smiles and your beautiful bouncy walk through baseball history. Marvelously executed like a picturesque suicide squeeze.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Words– 115 “Interview with a Nigel”

I’m throwing on my Barbara Walters cape here today, for a hard-hitting interview with one of the most exotic and enigmatic animals living in my house today, Nigel. This elusive terrier, rarely meets with the press and in fact, this is his first recorded interview in the mainstream press to date. His hard-hitting, provocative stances on all the major issues of the day are certain to have folks buzzing at the water-cooler Monday morning.

Don’t miss what’s sure to be front-page news on the web and in all the major papers worldwide in the days and weeks to come. Prepare to have your socks blown off with this series of incendiary bombshells, courtesy of local puppy heartthrob, Nigel the Assassin.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Covers – 114 “I’m Your Fool” by Steve Hunsberger

Hello. It is my birthday. Happy Birthday, Me. Yes, It is nice to make another year. I am humble.

When I started this here 365, there were some songs I knew I’d play certain days. “I’m Your Fool” was one of them, and I knew I’d play it today, on my birthday. My birthday is not just my birthday. It is also The Hunsbergers. Anniversary. We love them. They are our supreme amigos. Steve literally married me. I don’t mean we’re married. I mean he married me to Leanne, at his house, the same place he was wed to Tara, five years ago today. I MC’d their wedding and Steve smashed cake in my face. Leanne caught the bouquet. Great times.

Today, I celebrate our mutual holidays by playing a tune from the Hunsberger catalog, a tune I love called “I’m Your Fool.” Even though I’m sure there’s tight restrictions regarding sharing other people’s love songs, I’m dedicating this version to my dear wife Leanne, who makes me feel like every day’s my birthday. ALL IN!

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Words– 114 “How Now We Are Giants”

I’m the type of guy who thinks a lot about the beyond. I stay real close to my people who reside there and I go most from our very vivid interactions. I don’t talk about this much because there is no need to. But sometimes, we want to connect with our not-so-long lost, especially while still grieving or at certain times of they year.

I’ve been thinking a lot about my dear friend, Mike Warrington lately. He passed away last June and I’ve been thinking of him. His birthday will be 4/20 and it’ll be his first one away. Some friends from back at UMASS, where we all know each other from, threw a tribute concert for him last night in San Francisco. I’m sure it was amazing and I’m sorry I couldn’t be there to hang and play.

So, I’m going to tribute Mike or MJW as we called him, here in my own way, these next few days. I’ve been learning a few Alice In Chains tunes and last night I stayed up late as it became my birthday, writing some reflections on the enormous influence he had on me becoming who I am today. I am grateful and he was great.

So finally, around 3:30 AM, I lay down for bed and the first couple verses of a new song arrive in my head. Many times, I’d hop up for this, normally, it’s the only way to save the song, but this time I didn’t. I have enough tunes lately and it was late. I was tired. Time to sleep. This morning, I was fortunate. It was still there.

Operation 365 2– Jefferson Jay – Originals – 114 “Now We Are Giants” by Jefferson Jay

The idea of the song was and is that we are people, scuffling around trying to do our best and find our way, intermittently I suppose. We are all different. We are all the same and we all climb uphill often. It is life’s way. I imagined my closest friends who’ve passed standing tall around me like Giant Redwood trees. I felt their firm and quiet support.

They are giants now, greater than words and earthly things like living. They are elsewhere I imagine as they are with me. And I appreciate their presence. I very specifically appreciated so many one of their presents last night, Don, Tony, Angel, Mike, Grandma, Grandpa, Peter… It’s an honor to continue to know you and share your love, one and all.

So this is a little story about how I wrote this song.

Operation 365 2– Jefferson Jay – Originals – 113 “Every Day I Get to Be Me” by Jefferson Jay

Have I mentioned that I love this life? If I haven’t, now is time. I do. How wonderfully blessed we are. Even when tough times confront us, we can rise up and handle those challenges too. Some of my friends who do this daily and manage to maintain a positive attitude roughly all the while, are featured here in this video.

I work at St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center, which is a place special needs adults go during the day and have stimulating and enriching fun. I am honored to work there, I have meant many, many inspiring people, who help me maintain my rosy perspective on life each day.

Here, Charlie, Chelse and Bryce, unofficially referred to as CBC, perform a tune I wrote for them, at the El Cajon Public Library on April 9, 2016. They crushed it. They had fun and I am very proud. I have mentored and coached them on their music for years now and I love watching them continue to grow as people and performers.

Here they play “Every Day I Get to Be Me,” a song I wrote just for them. That’s why it has their names in it. I think showcases what they are all about, their positive disposition, their love for music, performing and other beautiful natural things.

I am thrilled with what these guys have done with this heartwarming jam and couldn’t think more highly of them. As much as I teach them, they, and the other folks at St. Mad’s, teach me more. Congratulations to St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center on 50 years, (this year) of making a positive impact on people’s lives in San Diego County.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Covers – 113 “What Deaner Was Talkin About” by Ween

So, now is the time, we begin to bring in the friends on this here 365. Months ago, on an aside I mentioned “Attention All Artists: Coming Soon.” Well, what I meant by that, is I’d love to get more people involved however and whenever on this project. I am taking requests, guest producers, guest musicians, guest songwriters... anything really that makes this project more engaging, anything that makes it not just my project, but yours as well. It’s our world, may as well be our 365 too, I say. If you have thoughts, feelings, opinions, or requests, please make them known to me ASAP, and I’ll do what I can with ‘em all.

Just yesterday, an old friend did this and I was thrilled that he thought of me. Before I even moved to San Diego, probably about 1999, I visited. I stayed at an incredible commune-like pad in Del Mar on 10th Street. It was truly magical, a special place. I visited their often, after my initial visit helped me decide to make San Diego my home in 2000. One of the friendliest faces in the whole wonderful bunch was a man named James, a.k.a. Miz. What a guy. I was feeling a pull toward San Francisco for a big event this weekend. I believe that is his home now, but I couldn’t make it, so cheers to James for feeling the vibe and reaching out. To honor that, here is a quick turnaround on your request from yesterday, Ween’s, “What Deaner Was Talkin About.” It was very fun to play. I think that will be evident to viewers. Thanks for picking this tune, Miz, and thanks always for being in touch. That’s what friends are for. Keep smiling. Keep shining. Knowing you can always count on me. For sure.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Words– 113 “The Invisible Bandit”

My manager name is “The Gift of Gab” and my first official client, and watch carefully, folks, ‘cause he’s coming to your town. I am proud to announce my first official singing. The Invisible Bandit.

He has done great work dominating all sorts of opponents overseas for some time now. He wished to take it to the next level and that is where I, The Gift of Gab, come in. Ready to make our presence felt and earn the hundreds of millions of dollars that this lethal competitor will certainly be loading our bank accounts with.

There is no answer for this man’s power. It is truly unsurpassed. And there is no answer to his finisher, the greatest hold in the long history of professional wrestling, The Invisible Lock. Our only goal is to fight in the heavens with the other Gods, as they are the only, THE ONLY!, ones who stand any chance, toe- to-toe with the greatest in-ring competitor never seen, my client, The Invisible Bandit. Woo!

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Covers – 112 “Sixteen Tons” by Tennessee Ernie Ford

“Sixteen Tons” is an awesome old school tune. I think it’s a song kids like, (or liked, I have no idea if kids ever hear this song now) because of the neat deep voice Tennessee Ernie Ford brings to his rendition. My lovely wife, Leanne, plays drums for my Jefferson Jay Band, but she also plays guitar and sings. Sometimes she even graces the stage of my Open Mic, Wednesdays from 6 to 9 at Winston’s Beach Club, here in Ocean Beach, San Diego. One of the tunes she plays from time to time is “Sixteen Tons” and I think that’s how I got into playing it. What fun. I love life.

I don’t love that the Yankees have blown their lead since I started this 365 here today, but even the Bronx Bombers can’t win ‘em all.  I just learned “Sixteen Tons” was originally written by Merle Travis in 1946 and was a number one hit for ol’ Tennessee Ernie in 1955. That’s one for all you fact hounds. I love me a fact hound. They’re fewer and further between these here days. It’s not 1955 anymore. Someone tell Marty McFly, please.

Operation 365 2– Jefferson Jay – Originals – 112 “To the Old Days” by Jefferson Jay

You’ll find few more nostalgic people than me. I love the thought of a kinder, simpler time where folks took care of each other like our fates are interrelated. News flash! They are. They are, folks, and the only way back to the old days is through today, through caring about our fellow man and woman and about making that care a priority in our daily lives.

It fires me up and it warms my heart. I am an optimist. I believe. I believe positive things can happen and singing about it, makes it happen to some degree. I love it. I love being a part of it and I love feeling the good vibes that course through my veins as they course through this glamorous, incredible universe we call home.

“To the Old Days” is one of the last remaining tunes I haven’t shared from the first time I ever wrote 24 tunes at once (well, really over a few days, but like, at once). This song makes me feel that simpler time that he song is about, so I guess in that sense “To the Old Days” is a transportive song and if you don’t believe me, look at the smile on my face when I sing it here.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Words– 112 “Love Is Our Destiny”

Well, I was little weary when I amped myself up to record these videos a little bit ago. Boy, was it worth it. I had a blast playing these tunes today and by the time I was done, I could hardly contain my enthusiasm. It’s for this reason I’m glad we’ve added a ranting area to this here 365 2. It’s good for me to share my passion and my emotion with you, because I believe this stuff is contagious. I don’t believe I’m the only completely love-fire-up goof. No, not at all. Some of you latent lovers are gonna come flying out of the closet when you see what it does for me, how high I am on this stuff. Love me some love. There is no substitute! Long way, easy way, either way. Love is coming. Step aboard or step aside, but even if you step aside, you’re still coming for the ride. You’re just taking the long way. Love is our destiny.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Covers – 111 “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane

Welcome to 4-11-16, Day 111 of this here Operation 365 2.

Seems fitting that I do “White Rabbit.” When your name is Jefferson, some people call you Jefferson airplane or Jefferson Starship. It happens, so frequently, in fact, that I don’t mind. Not only that but Jefferson Airplane singer Grace Slick lives in La Jolla, I believe, and she is my friend on Facebook. So “Hi Grace, Hope all’s well!”

It was fun playing “White Rabbit.” I gave her the ol’ Jefferson-Jay-Operation-365-2-speed-her-up treatment, which I quite enjoy giving tunes, I must say. Dig it, my friends. Hail!

Operation 365 2– Jefferson Jay – Originals – 111 “The Someday Song” by Jefferson Jay

“The Someday Song” blends into the big chunk of time between the 2 Operation 365s. All the tunes I wrote in that period of time from 2012-2015 reside in the big No Man’s Land of my tunes. My most recent CD, “Hallelujah Expressway,” available on iTunes, is full of tunes written in 2010-11. So all these other tunes aren’t on any CDs. The current CD I’m working on, my 7th, is all tunes I wrote for the first 365 in 2011, so those tunes aren’t even being worked on now either. Who knows if they ever will be? I’d hoped for my CDs to be a chronicle of my musical growth but I struggle to keep up with myself. It doesn’t help that there is roughly zero demand for these CDs…

Well, I guess that’s another reason we are here. So I can share these tunes and they can have a point in existing, even if the only point is 15 people watching them over the next few years. At least I did it and shared it. I can’t control the whole reception part, so I don’t focus on that too much. I don’t really remember writing this tune so much. It just kind of popped out, I remember. That’s kind of how it goes when I don’t have any 365 to write songs for. I just kind of write them when inspiration hits.

The big book seems to indicate I wrote this tune on 1-14-14. I wrote a few other tunes right in that same week or so. Maybe that’s why I don’t remember. Maybe it’s cause it doesn’t really matter when I wrote “The Someday Song.” I wrote it some day.

Operation 365 2– Jefferson Jay – Originals – 110 “24 Hours” by Jefferson Jay

Numbers can be fun, especially big juice ones like 24 and 365. Numbers that mean something to people, I like. So let’s look at this one for a sec. “24 Hours” is the final number of first 24-at-a-time batch of tunes I wrote. It was about a month ago now. I’ve been slowly working my way through them and sharing them lately. This makes most of them now, I think there’s a only a couple I haven’t done here yet for you.

Many, I recorded on a gorgeous sun-drenched weekend day about ten days ago. I like these videos. I was relaxed when I played them and it relaxes me to see the sun halo above my head. I post three videos every 24 hours these days. When I write 12 tunes, it’s 1 for each key. With 24, that’s doubled.

I am also the guy who founded produced, promoted, hosted and played “Jefferson Jay’s 24 Hours of Free Music” 4 times (’03, ’05, ’08, ’09) and I hope to do it again some day. So I guess the number 24 has some significance to me. There is one more thing I think of when I watch this video. It sounds like some Don Truesdail (my late great departed amigo) song. I’m not sure exactly which one it sounds like, but one of ‘em. It’s not exactly like it, but close enough to make me think of my friend and feel good thoughts.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Covers – 110 “Hey There Delilah” by Plain White T’s

Many moons ago I lived in a lovely little apartment complex/subculture at the end of Santa Cruz Ave. In fact, I recorded almost the entire 365 from that locale. I had a lovely set of neighbors back then, one of who was a gal from South Africa named Bianca. I’d go chill with her in apartment sometimes and she liked to watch the MTV Countdown on the weekends. Those are probably the only times I watched the MTV Countdown since the 80’s.

I remember Rihanna. I think it was an “Umbrella” tune, but the main one I remember is “Hey There Delilah” and here we are. It’s a catchy little number. Enjoy it.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Words– 110 “The Power of a Plan”

Gotta love a person with a plan. Where’d we be without folks like that? Now, there’s all kinds of people and plans. Sometimes, people even make plans for other people and that can be a good thing too. So, today, I was blessed to have one of my special needs friends laying out a little setlist for me. And it was good.

Operation 365 2– Jefferson Jay – Originals – 109 “I’m Me” by Jefferson Jay

Busy day off today. If you can call sleeping late ‘cause you need to catch up on rest, busy. I do. Acupuncture. Busy. Lunch with Dan? Busy. Recording Paul on the CD? Busy. Band practice next. Videos in between. Blessed, in this life we are, quirks and all. Hypotheticals, actuality, a fine line divides these two bits of scratchy.

Friendship. The beyond. It’s all gravey, excuse me, gravy. Each instant. We are blessed to be. Me.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Words – 109 “An Important Announcement”

We interrupt this Jefferson Jay Band Practice to bring you this important announcement.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Covers– 109 “Suicide Is Painless” by

“Suicide Is Painless” is the most depressing song ever. That’s why I wasn’t going to post it. I recorded this version years ago when I was feeling blue. It’s the theme from “M*A*S*H*” so it hits me in my nostalgia bone too. It’s a beautiful song too. Here it is though. I’ve had too much to do today and need some time away from the hubbub of 365ing. It’s practice time. I can’t do it to you. It’s too sad. I’ll figure something else out later.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Covers– 109 “Forever In Blue Jeans” by Neil Diamond

I honestly thought this tune was called “Reverend Blue Jeans” until like 40 seconds ago. Whoa.

Uhh… it’s a capella. And short…

Operation 365 2– Jefferson Jay – Originals – 108 “More Fun” by Jefferson Jay

Want “More Fun” on a Sunday? Well, you got it. Here is another blast from the not-so-distant past. One of those days about a month or so ago when I wrote 24 tunes at once, “More Fun” was born. I think I am concluding that 12 may be the maximum optimum number of songs to write at once. I mean, you CAN write 24 tunes at once, but it takes weeks after to even process what you’ve done and weeks more to figure out what you’ve actually said. It’s an enriching and informative process, but it is lengthy and full of twists and turns. I guess it’s fun in that way, an odyssey indeed.

I think I will do what I did yesterday and briefly review these lyrics to see if I can get a firmer grasp on exactly what I’m saying. OK. I read a verse. I think it means to savor and enjoy living your dreams, ‘cause that’s more fun that the exciting things mentioned like “going to work” for example. OK. I follow me so far. The chorus, which is admittedly one of the stranger things I’ve written in a minute, I think is supposed to hearken back to the “more fun” days of childhood. When we were kids, we played a little game called “Red Light, Green Light, 1-2-3.” It involved a lot of running, starting, and stopping. I seem to have mixed that in with some creepy imagery, perhaps intended to juxtapose the darkness of life and history with the fun of youth and the mundane nature of some days.

Need I admit, I am speculating slightly in these interpretations. I don’t even know exactly what I was thinking. Life is like a puzzle and so are songs. Verse 2 seems to reference that unusual and often disturbing ways the world has changed since I was child. I get even mentions crying children specifically. Hey! Maybe my song makes sense after all! (If I didn’t consider this to be slightly serious writing, I would’ve thrown a smiley face in there.) All of sudden the point seems oddly obvious, as in, did I really need to re-read the words to get it. The point is, have more fun…. Unless the point is, we’re already having more fun, more fun that we can believe with our eyes and our mind. The last line of an old song I wrote called, “Ego,” says “It seems I’ll never know.” Unless I already do…

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Words – 108 “What Is a Disability?”

Yesterday, I took my talented troupe of performers from St. Madeleine Sophie's Center to perform a handful to tunes at The El Cajon Public Library for a special even they held. It was lovely. There were parrots, Mexican traditional dancers, belly dancers even, and my gang played too. They played beautifully and were very well-received. I was proud to put it lightly. Honored, actually, I was. They handled themselves like professionals and sang and played their hearts out. People were impressed.

After I dropped the crew back at their abodes, I thought to myself, What about them makes them "disabled?"  I realized that while they may have some challenges physically or intellectually in some ways, the huge majority of folks I work with are incredibly optimistic, positive people. I thought and continue to think about how many people who are thought to be "fully abled' can not make such a claim. I think they ability to maintain a positive attitude is a "super ability" and a "disability" that upsets me far more than the ones I am face to face with weekly, is being a curmudgeon.

Folks, everybody has a million things to be happy about. My "special needs" adults get this. Even my colleagues who have difficult jobs caring for some of the more challenged special needs folks get it. How come so many other people still don't get it? To me the inability to find joy in the miracle that is life is the disability that concerns me most. Honestly.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Covers– 108 “Yellow Submarine” by The Beatles

Deep-ass version of "Yellow Submarine" with some lyrical interpretation offered as a bonus, post-credits. Did you know I love you? Yes, each and every one of you. All the people on the planet, or as The Beatles liked to call it, The "Yellow Submarine." Happy Sunday. Happy Every Day.

Operation 365 2– Jefferson Jay – Originals – 107 “You Can’t Wait” by Jefferson Jay

Here, we continue down the road of 24 tunes I wrote about a month ago. As I go through these jams, posting and listening and watching, this batch of jams appears to be a call to action for me to do something. What? I wish I knew. Keep pushing forward? Reach out more? Perhaps that will be the next domino to reveal itself in this here terrific mystery that is life.

Well, apparently, whatever there is that needs to be done, there is some sense of urgency. Gosh, I wish I knew what it was I needed to do. I hope that that’s the next domino to rip it’s clothes off and nakedly show me what I need to do. Until then, videos, good vibes, love, creativity, learn, repeat.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Covers– 107 “Wagon Wheel” by Bob Dylan & Ketch Secor

"Copyright music and lyrics reproduced by kind permission of Special Rider -- for original, exclusive performances by Bob Dylan, check-out the official channel at www.youtube.com/bobdylan."

So, this version of “Wagon Wheel” is OK. There sure have been many versions of this tune popping out in recent years. It’s become one of the most covered tunes in the history of my Open Mic. I learned in researching this jam, that Bob Dylan wrote the chorus as a throwaway in 1972. It was a extra piece he didn’t use off the soundtrack to the movie we was doing then. In 1995, that Ketch Secor fellow, at age 17, later of Old Crow Medicine Show, write the rest of the tune. It became a huge hit. When you’re Bob Dylan, that happens.

I'm blessed to realize amazing things happen in my life too. Last night, I presided over one of the greatest shows I've ever been a part of. Raelee Nikole, Israel Maldonado, and Mark Goffeney all raised the roof in an unforgettable way last night at The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, in La Jolla, CA. It moved me in a way that isn't going to fade any time soon. Mark Goffeney has no arms and played this tune, and all the other ones he played, with his feet last night. It simply must be seen to be believe. Google that. In fact, I saw it, and still remain in disbelief at every incredible aspect of it. He told me when I interviewed him before the show that he felt, "lucky, blessed, and humble." Amen, my friend, amen. Color me rocked.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Words – 107 “Thank You So Much”

This is just a little message of gratitude to Mark Goffeney, Israel Maldonado, Raelee Nikole, The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla, CA, and everybody who came out last night on what was an unforgettable evening of music and good vibes.

Operation 365 2– Jefferson Jay – Originals – 106 “It’s Not Too Late” by Jefferson Jay

So, I’ve gathered after a few weeks of inspection and introspection that this first batch of 234 tunes I wrote (at once) is me encouraging myself (and everyone else, presumably) to continue to aggressively pursue my dreams and the positive change I’d love to see in the world around me in my life. I would like to be part of that change, whatever it is. I know that I will do whatever the universe has in store for me. I embrace that truth am grateful to even have that opportunity. Very grateful.

I am down to do more and I think these songs are trying to keep me mentally prepared in the even that I am called to some sport of action at some point. Then again, maybe I already am. Likely, it’s both, though. It usually is. Usually, we are doing some important, even as we walk through our daily lives. We interact with and affect people in ways far beyond what we ever realize. In that sense, I guess I’m already doing exactly what I need to do but, I feel, conceive, and sense, more on the horizon.

I feel these songs are trying to alert and prepare me mentally for that eventuality. The world needs a lot of love and help and not so many folks are as down as I am to participate in that reawakening of consciousness and kindness that the world really needs. Many are, but many others will need to grow into this realization. Thankfully, and finally, it’s already happening. I am deeply humble grateful to have a seat at the table and a piece in the game.

I think another way of summing up the point of this song is, “Have Hope,” because positive things can and will happen. “Have Hope,” ‘cause as the song says, “It’s Not Too Late.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Covers– 106 “Yer So Bad” by Tom Petty

Hello. Tom Petty’s “Full Moon Fever” might be the first album I got into that was legitimately cool. Yes, as an East Coast/Jersey kid I was well-versed on “The Stranger,” “Glass Houses,” “52nd Street,” and all the other prime staples of the Billy Joel catalog, but when you’re an East Coast/Jersey kid, especially back then, it doesn’t really count. You don’t have much of a choice. You’re pretty much stuck with Billy Joel, whether you like it or not. There’s not much choice in the matter, so I can’t give myself any credit for that. Fortunately for me, I liked it.

“Full Moon Fever” was different. It was legitimately cool. Tom Petty is cool. While “Running Down A Dream,” “Free Fallin’,” and “ I Won’t Back Down,” were the big hits of the record ( I had the tape) I always had a special place for “Yer So Bad.” Still do. Thank Tom Petty, for not only “Full Moon Fever,” but “Wildflowers,” and “Into the Great Wide Open” too. They meant a lot to me and still do. Nice run there. Hope we can catch up more in person son. Peace.

Operation 365 2 – Jefferson Jay – Words – 106 “A World Without Arms”

Folks, I'm extremely excited for my show tonight at The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla. Years back, I brought our fine acoustic artists into the incredible place for art that is The Athenaeum and we've been going on and off there ever since. Tonight, one of my long-time goals, running tis Series becomes a reality as Mark Goffeney of Big Toe will play our event. Long story, short. he has no arms. Yet he plays guitar and sings like an MFer. I believe he has played all over the world and I can't wait to interview him before the show and learn all the details of his incredible story. How inspiring can ya get folks. No arms!

Peace
