Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 188 Philly B "Phoebe" and Lost Dog Speech - 2-17-2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIxFPdT_se4

Lots of momentous announcements gong down here. Just sitting close to the stage at this show could get you pregnant, we learned. Philly B can project. Philly B's parents' dog Samson had run away days earlier. Philly here, offered a reward. It's funny because a year later, after living it up on the streets of OB awhile, he came back. Fascinating. Here is Philly, doing one of my favorite tunes of his, "Phoebe," a song of a guitar that passed away. This was recorded on February 17, 2009, What a wild time. It's kind of like now in that way. It seems.

Still bringing you the greatest hits of driving around in my mom's car with her in the late 70s and early 80s as a youth. Ahhh, cassette decks. I would say I miss them, but I still have one in my car and it actually works. At least until I sell him any day now. Then it will work, but for someone else. Yes, my mom was bringing it with the easy listening at this time. Kenny Rogers, Neil Diamond, Manilow, Air Supply, these were all standard fare for then and there. They call 'em formative years for a reason and here is one of my most beloved Air Supply numbers, "Sweet Dreams."

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 188 "Lead"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_8B8Q2q_BA

"Lead" is a tune I wrote and recorded on my CD "Yellow." I don't believe I've ever played it live. "Lead" was inspired by a conversation I had with my brother and sister. I remember jotting all the words down right after and having the melody in my head. "Yellow" can be listened to or purchased here, www.jeffersonjay.bandcamp.com

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 187 Jillian Doty "Freak Show" - 12-6-2008
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dj43CmmGHoQ

Let's do Day Two from the "Soulful Songstress," Jillian Doty Henrikson. Much fun catching up with them yesterday. Here is Jillian's song, "Freak Show," which details her experience as a Denny's waitress. This very cool song was recorded at my "12 Hours of Free Music"concert on December 6, 2008 by my main man, Dylan Avery. Dig.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 187 "Can't Smile Without You" by Barry Manilow
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4_feturr_0

In my continuing tribute to driving around in the car with my Mom in the late 70's/early 80s as a youth, I bring Barry Manilow's classic "Can't Smile Without You." Pretty fun tune. Makes me think of Sesame Street, same era. Comes complete with Barry's trademark key changes for effect, a time-honored, if not way overused technique to building intensity in a song. Thanks Barry. You seem like a very pleasant fellow.

I'll dedicate this number to everybody in this world I can't smile without. You know who you are. If you think you are you, it is true. You are.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 187 "Take Time On Your Road to Freedom"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55pwglw6Hgo

Here we go. It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that this will most likely be Shanti the Hamster's final appearance on the 365. No, thank God, she's not dead. She has just moved to home with a teenage girl who will probably be able to give Shanti far more love than I had been, as of late. I have been focusing on loving my wonderful girlfriend leanne, our super puppy, Nigel, and of course, Angel, my venerable and lovig amiga. I had found myself with less and less time to snuggle her and I felt bad. Best of luck to Shanti in her new home. Thanks for all the good times. I loved you... and still do... in a used to live on my desk sort of way.

In other news, "Take Time On Your Road to Freedom" was written with an eye towards the progress upcoming. To the magic that will happen just ahead of now. The point of "Take Time On Your Road to Freedom" is to enjoy each step along the journey. Times change. People (and hamster) come in and out of your life at one point or another. Savor every secdon 'cause you never know whats' next.

I composed this extemporaneously, inspired by dogs, as the camera captured my action. I had no idea what I was going to sing or what the chords were. I hope hope you enjoy my spontaneous creation for you. A song that never would have existed (I can't imagine) without the magic of the Operation 365. Peace. I love you and Hail Shanti! May her life kick great ass in the future.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 186 Jillian Doty "The Sound" - 12-6-2008
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCUCE7osNPM

This is my friend Jillian Doty, now Jillian Doty Henrikson, from 12 Hours of Free Music, 12-6-2008. I called Jillian "The Soulful Songstress," back in the day, when we had a nice scene going on and she certainly earned that moniker. This is one of her original tunes. I'm not sure what it's called. She and her husband Philly B once reigned supreme as the King and Queen of my Open Mic, back when I was hosting one. They now live in Tucson, Arizona with their two children, Tieg and Arlo, but a well-placed rumor states they may be moving back here real soon. Hooray rumor!

We enjoyed adult beverages earlier this Sunday afternoon at The Sunshine Company and played a game of billiards. Later, we will reassemble and test our wits in a a contest of Trivial Pursuit at Leanne's abode. Enjoy Jillian and Phil, cause we'll be featuring them through this Memorial Day Weekend into next week on the Operation 365.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 186 "Holly Holy" by Neil Diamond
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp7dqy5mGNM

Been reminiscing to the late 70s,w hen my mom drove around and listened to Manilow, Diamond, Air Supply, and Kenny Rogers. Feeling a bit like saluting those times and the buck starts here. With Neil Diamond. Talk about a guy who puts it out there, lays it on real thick. Gotta appreciate the effort. I am going to cut my doggy clips somehow now, to make this work for you. See you soon.

So here are some clips form fun with puppies. Thanks to Leanne, Nigel, Angel, and Buddy, this weekend's house guest, for appearing. Enjoy playfulness. Avoid carelessness. I didn't and dropped my camera on its' facey. I hope that she's OK.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 186 "Livin' in the Laps of Dogs"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMY5gDNwKL4

This is a little ditty I was inspired via video to write. I was watching a video of all those folks in Brazil walking around in a house all miked up playing music. It was made to look like one take.

This one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QW0i1U4u0KE

It was really well done, and it was received over 3 million hits in the one week it's been up. So I saw all these cute doggies lying around. I've been puppy sitting and its been a doggy dog world around here for days. Pups everywhere. Moved a few Maltese pups to a new home earlier this week, but that's another doggy story for another doggy time.

So I saw them all snuggled up and the whole thing just came to me./ Tok a minute or two to work the song out, but that was that and I gave it a go. Now I'm not saying this is as well-thought out or well-executed as that thing, but it's a cute, creative idea with puppies. They were good, but they only had one puppy that I remember. I have three. Thanks for inspiration. nice tune. Nice video. Nice job.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 185 Jefferson Jay - "Killing's Wrong" - 11-17-2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bRan_jDGxg

This is spirited version of my seminal hit, "Killing's Wrong," found on my album "Blue; A Kid's Album," available here jeffersonjay.bandcamp.com/album/blue-a-kids-album

Be the first person ever to buy my album on bandcamp. Please.

I just realized that I recorded this version of "Killing's Wrong" the day I sold my beloved Monte Carlo. I had no idea. Yesterday, I posted a song about that car, recorded this very same set, just before actually. Here I am again, on the verge of selling another beloved vehicular friend. My Cutlass Ciera, "Puffy," is available now. He'll be gone soon too and makes me sad, but what can you do?

Speaking of things that were close to my heart and now are finally gone. Portugalia, the venue I gave my heart and soul to, for four and a half years has finally closed its doors. "There comes a time when we heed a certain call," says the first line of "We Are The World." This "Killing's Wrong" was recorded at my Open Mic there on November 17, 2009. Paul Ruiz joins me on trumpet and The Soul Man on guiro. A very spirited participation from the crowd that night adds quite a bit of spunk to these festivities.

Death is part of life, for cars, venues, animals, and people, even... Killing's Wrong. Death isn't. Such a fine line.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 185 "Santeria" by Sublime
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5b7c1aFIHE

This is a great tune by Bradley Nowell of Sublime. Took me awhile to get it close to my satisfaction today, but we got there, more or less. Slight relapse on the voice tip, but I'm feelin' fine. Hope you are too. L'chiem.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 185 "The Milnes School Rap"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVg1E9K75c0

Talk about going old school. Literally. So if you really want to dig into it, I guess this is where it all started. The first song I ever wrote? It must be. So we were in 6th grade. Rap was new to the scene. Seems appropriate given the passing of rap forefather Gil Scot-Heron yesterday, not sure that's my motivation here though. Who knows? So rap was new and my best friend at the time, Chris Boghosian, had the idea that we should write a rap tune about the 6th grade. We had all just discovered girls. We were going to "boy-girl parties" for the first time. It was an exciting time.

It was a Sunday night. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was in the kitchen in The House of Love (where I grew up). Must have been just after 10:30PM because Sports Extra with Bill Mazer was on Fox, right about the time it first became a network. I felt inspiration strike. It must have been the first time ever that sensation struck, but like now, I knew better than to deny it. So I grabbed a pencil and a piece of paper, much like I do to this day, when inspiration visits, and I started writing the words to "The Milnes School Rap."

The next day, I unleashed it to my classmates before school as we waited outside to be let in. Chris was pissed and I can't say I blamed him. It was his idea we do it together and then I go do the whole thing. I didn't plan it that way. It just happened. Sorry Bogo. Laura Currie and Erin Bleiweiss both had lovely voices. The three of us were in a theoretical singing band called "Youth." I say theoretical, 'cause we never actually did anything, but they DID, sing the intro to the jam. In fact, they may have made it up. It sounded really good when they sang it, which was predictable because they were two very talented young girls. Years later, Laura and I starred in "Little Shop of Horrors" and Erin and I performed in several Masques productions together including lead roles in a show called "While The Lights Were Out," under the direction of the legendary Thomas Ratzin.

A bit later, there was a 6th grade Milnes School talent show. Danny Meyer and I did a couple rap songs. We wrote another one called "It's Not Possible," and I did this one for the assembled masses. Milnes School principal Linda Schoeppler was not so keen on the message in the lyrics that the whole school sucked except the 6th grade. What can I tell ya? That was my view at the time. I can see a lot of similarities between me then and me now, looking back on this. Perhaps that's why they call them formative years.

Shout-outs to Frank "Macaroons" Gordon, Mark Evans (whose verse I just realized I forgot in this version), Chris Boghosian, my man Tony Russo (referred to here as Chris's bodyguard Ace,) Jason Patterson, Danny, Laura, Erin, and Jackie VanderBeek, for inspiring me as a youth. A final acknowledgement to Tonys 6th grade autograph book, which makes an appearance. Tony, you're the man, always.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 184 Jefferson Jay - "Boil Me In Oil" - 11-17-2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7dGdb6K4ws

Seemed appropriate. I wrote "Boil Me In Oil" after I had my old Monte Carlo for ten years. I loved that car so much. Got me out to California and back and forth across the country twice. I was so indebted to that car for never getting me killed and lord knows, I gave it enough chances to. "Boil Me In Oil" appears on "Yellow" CD, by the way, which can be heard or purchased here jeffersonjay.bandcamp.com now.

Speaking of "Yellow," about five years ago, I bought my current car, a cream-colored (yellowish) Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera S. I named him "Puffy," but in recent years, my friends have taken to calling him The Bananamobile, and that seems to fit as well. Not as glamorous or inglamourous (an in infamous) as my Monte Carlo, this vehicle also protected me on the roads perfectly for a significant period of time. We grew very close. I always have felt extremely comfortable driving him, and it is a melancholy moment for me to say least, to know very shortly, he will be moving to a new home.

I hate to let him go. I have recently acquired a Volkswagen EuroVan, ironically known as the Tealmobile, as this whole "mobile" motif was unplanned. I am just not in a position to be a one-man two-car household these days and the ride that fits the whole band is the van, so it stays and sadly, "Puffy" goes. Still haven't found a great candidate for purchaser yet, but it is imminent. I can feel it. Kind of sucks. I am so much more comfortable kicking back in its's weet Sedan style, and while no car will ever be my Monte Carlo, I am a loyal guy. What can I say? I wish you well, oh, Arthur J. Puffarelli, (his full name). May your next home be as loving and tight knit, as this one has been. I will miss you, big-time.

A final shout out goes to Zsa Zsa Gabor, who gets mentioned in this tune and may be gone, even before my Oldsmobile. Zsa Zsa, thank you for being human and interesting. See you all in the next beyond. Finally, this was recorded on November 17, 2009 and features Paul Ruiz on trumpoet and The Soul Man, who is 92, and is going to outlive each last one of us, on guiro.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 184 "You Can't Always Get What You Want" - The Rolling Stones
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dIBO85PpG0

Hard to believe it but I think this might be my first Stones tune in the 365. Hard to believe you can get through 183 days and not accidentally stumble on a Stones tune. "You Can't Always Get What You Want" has been in my head a for a few days. I had no idea I'd be playing it on banjo, but it worked. Love the banjo. While it's true that you can;t always get what you want, it certainly doesn't mean stop trying. I have a few bullets left in this gun of mine and I have no desire or willingness to be a sub, or a teacher even, to much longer. I believe I have plenty of talent and plenty to offer and I do not wish to leave it all lying and rotting inside me.

Let's face it. San Diego is a wasteland for a talented person to be. You can have great friends and great times, which I do. I cherish that and wouldn't trade it for anything, but something's gotta give. I am not willing to fritter my life away doing meaningless work just cause so many other people think that's what you have to do. I don't. I can't host shows and I feel a huge compulsion to give something back to the world that I live in. I feel a sense of brotherhood with all the other people on the planet and if I don't do everything I can to at least entertain and at most, inspire and enlighten folks to the great gift we have that is life, then I feel I've missed the whole opportunity I've been given here. I can't let that go down without a fight.

What to do? That is the million dollar question, isn't it? I'm not entirely sure, obviously, or I would have done it already. Leave SD more. Believe that big things can happen. That is huge. Keep trying. Go with the flow. We will see. Life is exciting. Isn't it?

Oh, I only played this one time ever. This time. Not too shabby...

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 184 "Hello Fellow Earthlings"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFV6tpML1lM

This was a new experiment. It may lead to a direction I go often as the 365 begins its' grand descent into completion. So, for the first time, I threw a capo on the banjo. That was cool. I wanted to play C, F and G, but I didn't want it to sound the same as all the other tunes. Hail the capo. Then I needed lyrics. I fished around my computer and a newer notebook briefly for something to sing, but nothing popped up quickly. So I went into my massive archives, which are there for just that reason. I have about 80 or so composition notebooks that I've been writing in for years, since 1992. They are collections of my thoughts, feelings, opinions, and ideas, and occasionally some lyrics live there as well.

I grabbed a "random" book, and opened to a "random" page, which happened to be page one. It was my book "Alternative to Patience." They mostly have names. Then I switched from page one, I just remembered, to something later in the book. I found a thing I wrote, probably in 1993, called "Hello Fellow Earthlings." It is about how we, the Earth's inhabitants, all have a lot more in common, than we typically tend to focus on. This would become quite clear, if some non-Earth-based life forms were to present themselves. This song encourages us to focus on the bonds based in these similarities, instead of all the things that separate us, so needlessly. I hope to share more from these books in the weeks and months to come. Sharing is caring, they say. I agree.

Some people seek to benefit from pitting people against each other. Some call it capitalism, That rapture liar Harold Camping is one of those people. I would like to see that trend reverse.

NOTE: youtube "suggests" I add "sean" to my tags every singe day. What's up with that? Who's "sean?" Can never trust that youtube...

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 183 Jefferson Jay "Destinies Combined" 2-12-2010
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiEnK8sOcFw

Today is a red letter day in the 365 big-time. Made it halfway from Thanksgiving to Thanksgiving, 183 days in a row. Excited to start the grand descent. Downhill is tougher in the knees, but easier on time and on the mind. I chose this clip here for today for a few reasons. The main reason is it gives props to my boy Don Truesdail who I haven't spoken about here on the 365in awhile, but is always in my heart and in my soul. Newcomers to the 365 may not know, but Don is one of my best friends. He passed away on January 13, 2009. He was a local songwriter like many of my friends and a music teacher as well. I feel as close to him as ever, if not closer and I wrote this song about the unique way our friendship grew in the year after he died. I finished writing it on January 13, 2010. On the anniversary of his passing, I wrote the lyrics as I sat with his wife, Nancy, another dear friend of mine, staring at the waves off the cliffs by the ocean near my home.

I talk before the song starts about how I'm going to plow ahead, keep going. That's what I intend to do here as well. Life is crazy and unpredictable. Every day lately, I am faced with circumstances I couldn't have possibly imagined days or even minutes before. I am ready for the next challenge in so many ways. I am ready to consummate my reason for being; To connect with people and help facilitate a discussion of meaningful matters that is largely lacking in the popular world today. There are a million channels on TV now and nobody is discussing the real problems in the world and what we can do to solve them. no one is talking about what it takes to be happy in today's world and how we can pull together to make the world a safer, more peaceful place. These changes begin with us, inside our minds. They are deeply personal decisions. It is our world, but until we claim it for ourselves it will just hang there, waiting for someone to do something more relevant than making money and spending it. We are those someones and I intend to do whatever I can in m lifetime to leave this lace better than I found it. I know the odds are against me but I also know anything can happen and I am committed to helping make it so. I am an artist and I care about the world. Now I need to find a way to reach more people and survive that way. It is time. Time that we arrive. Our fates our all connected. Our destinies combined.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 183 "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppGbvFoPIUM

Anybody got a guess why I picked "Livin' on a Prayer" to be my cover on this special, halfway-through-the-365-holiday? "Whoa, we're halfway there." If you said that, then you get the Golden Potato, or whatever fictional award one gets for guessing that correctly. Bon Jovi is from New Jersey. So am I. and that means... nothing. No relevance whatsoever. Take my hand and we'll make it. I swear. I do like this song though and I think it works on the banjo.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 183 "Impact"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRlzfeU7i4U

I wrote this song last week. Been meaning to post it ever since, but haven't had the chance yet. A couple of times lately, I've been drifting off to sleep when songs pop into my head, the chords, specifically. C G Em... etc... One thing I've learned over my years of creating is that when the moment of inspiration strikes, ignore it at your own risk. So I don't ignore it. I get up and follow my inspiration as far down the road towards completion as I possibly can. When it comes to writing songs, I find, the more you do today, the less you have to do some other day. Procrastination and songwriting are not very cozy bedfellows. So I write my songs all the way to fruition whenever I can. Seize that inspiration.

I like this this song, "Impact." It is about preparing to make your dreams come true now. Essentially preparing for and achieving "Impact." It is an upbeat and fun number, all written late at night. It is about what dreams are and what it takes to make them come true. It says things are always changing, act directly and with love. I realized just now I sang one line wrong and it's an important one. At the end of the bridge the line is, "Live every moment like you feel you must." Amen!

Halfway through the Operation 365 today. Hooray! Can't wait to see what happens. Probably going to be whatever I make happen. And that's a challenge I'm willing to accept.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 182 Richard Romero and Friends - 3-4-2010
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxeqXWQOuv0

Richard Romero is a dear friend of mine. Back when I had weekly shows (and hopefully I will again soon) I would have Richard start them off. Richard is reliable, professional and always got things going right. This is from his set on March 4, 2010. At that show he was joined by Paul Lopez on congas, The Soul Man on guiro, Jack Davidson on guitar, and Paul Ruiz on trumpet. At one point or another all those dudes also played in my band, Paul, Richard and Soul Man still do and I'm going to go have band practice with them in a few. Actually, Soul Man can;t make. 92year old son of a gun has a gig.

This is just a short excerpt as Richard's songs are often longform and go on for some time. I don't have that much time today. Enjoy a nice trumpet solo though from Paul Ruiz. Some silly guy pulled out in front of his big truck yesterday while Leanne and I were driving and in return said silly guy got his Audi convertible smashed and Paul and I got airbags to the face. Leanne got rear view mirror to the face. Everybody appears to be OK. Thank God.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 182 "Puff the Magic Dragon" - Peter, Paul, and Mary
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1RTSGh6E4Y

was actually more feeling like doing "Leavin' on a Jet Plane," also by Peter, Paul and Mary, but figured I should save that for two weeks from now when I am actually leaving on a jet plane. So this was a natural fallback. I tried to play up the super hippied out aspect of this song, as that seems to be what it isa most known for at this point in history. I remember, or at least I think I remember watching a "Puff the Magic Dragon" cartoon as a child that I liked. I know I liked the "Pete's Dragon" cartoon, but I'm pretty sure it made me cry. I saw after I finished this jam that it has a capo on the second fret. Does that count as making it my own?

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 182 "Ken the Alcoholic"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tv0cAfQoAeg

I wasn't really planning on ever doing this one as part of the 365, because it is so deliberately heavily derivative of "Puff the Magic Dragon." But once I busted out "Puff," it seemed today would be the perfect day. There is a hilarious story with this song. Pressed for time, I'll have to tell it really quick. I have a friend named Ken. He likes to give me a hard time. I usually just take it and say little back. Every so often though, I have to flex my muscle just so he knows that if I really want to, i could eviscerate him any time I want.

So one time, my visiting friend Jason Paterson and I went to Ken's bar that he owns. It was new at the time and empty. I busted this out for ken and the few people assembled. Needless to say, Ken was horrified. A little too close to home? Perhaps. So there you go. I'm sure Ken would love this particular version though, because Ken, although he'll never admit it, is a funny guy. Very funny. Thanks to Pete, Paul, and Mare for loaning me this melody. I promise I'll never try to make any money off it. I just used it once to make a purple man blush and now again as my original on Day 182 of my 365. Peace, Kenny.

The Greens of Mind are Charlotte on violin and guitar, Barbra Tolbert on vocals, Justin Mills on cello, and myself, Jefferson on vocals and guitar. Hope you've enjoyed this special performance from The Greens of Mind.

Steve Laub and Dave Foster of Laubster Video filmed the show and did an awesome job. Thanks dudes.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 180 The Greens of Mind "Moondrop" - 6-8-2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-6PzszpO00

Here at Operation 365, we have been presenting the entire set of The Greens of Mind at The Athenaeum Music and Arts Library in La Jolla, from June 8, 2009. I wrote my Master's Thesis for San Diego State University on the history of this venerable institution. It led to the Acoustic Evenings at The Athenaeum with Jefferson Jay series. The Athenaeum has showcased jazz and chamber music in their beautiful sanctuary for music. I felt some of San Diego's finest acoustic talents would fit nicely alongside those performers and the folks at The Athenaeum agreed.

This particular show was one of the finest in the series as Billy Bushwalla, known associate of multi-platinum recording artist Jason Mraz, and former Frank Zappa sideman, Mike Keneally filled out the bill. The Greens were dressed nicely and ready to roll this night, The show was entirely acoustic, a challenge enjoyed by my fellow Greens and I. The other Greens are Barabara Tolbert on vocals, Charlotte James on violin and guitar and Justin Mills on cello.

"Moondrop" was another song I wrote specifically for this group more or less. I love "Moondrop." It was one of my favorite tunes I've ever written. I gave Barbara the opportunity to write the girl part, but she was like "..." So I said " OK, I'll do it." Moments later, "Moondrop" was finished. I like it a lot. To me, it is reminiscent of a musical version of the old silent movies where the arch-villain tied the damsel in distress to the train tracks. I borrowed a little taste of Tom Waits vocal stylings and invented a cosmic libation, hence the "moonrdrop," and the rest is musical history.

Special thanks to Steve Laub and Dave Foster of Laubster Video for the filming and producing expertise.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 180 "My Old School" by Steely Dan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_oPLCi5pnk

My voice is too shot to sing, I'm afraid. Laryngitis is in the house. Let's see how I creatively get around this one. I surprised my self with this one. I was looking for a tune I could do on an exotic instrument (I have several). Maybe I'd do in instrumental. Make it my own somehow. Meanwhile. I typed Steely Dan and C into google (the banjo's easier for me in C) and guess what. "My Old School" is in C. I love this jam. Who doesn't? It's a tad rough. My voice is torn up. I need to rest it, so I can't be doing it over and over again or anything, but it is decent. I got through, It's not everyday you hear "My Old School" on banjo. I love Steely Dan. I want to go see the at The Greek Theater in July. Just need to scrape up and extra 150 dollars. That's all. We'll see.

I just remembered Steely Dan was in my dream last night. I have been having tons of vivid dreams lately, some more pleasant than others.I was peeking in the room to see if I could catch a glimpse of Donald Fagen. I couldn't, but I did see Walter Becker, tearing it up on guitar. That was pretty cool. Did I mention my band opened for Steely Dan in 2006. Yes. That was pretty cool too.

In honor of the 180th day of Operation 365, I penned a little poem called "180." I threw a pretty little banjo part behind it and voila! "180" is about changing whatever you don't like about your life so you do, instituting the proverbial 180.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 179 The Greens of Mind "The Greens of Mind" - 6-8-2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_X7rOEgAiw

Today's song from The Greens of Mind's June 8, 2009 show at The Athenaeum Music and Arts Library in La Jolla, CA is "The Greens of Mind." We liked the song so much we named the band after it. Destructo Bunny suggested we do and we did. "The Greens of Mind" song is about how the changes you want to see in the world begin with yourself. The Greens of Mind feature myself on guitar, Barbara Tolbert on vocals, Charlotte James on violin and guitar and Justin Mills on cello.

Justin Mills and I wrote this tune. I remember it vividly, though it this point it was more than couple years ago, We were hanging out and we decided to write a song. He said let's make it D sharp. I said, OK, and then proceded to accidentally make the song in C sharp. I wrote most of it for there, but it was definitely a collaboration. Without us sitting down and sating let's write a song, there would be no song. Steve Laub and Dave Foster of Laubster Video filmed and produced this for us. Mike Keneally and Billy Bushwalla also played at this show. Maybe when I'm done sharing all this Greens stuff, I'll try to find a way to put a clip of two from their sets in here as well. Thank you Steve.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 179 "Waiting In Vain" by Bob Marley
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBz_q2ogv1o

"Waiting in Vain" is universal and beautiful. It has so many application sin this world right now. Rapture, anyone? We are all waiting for something. We never know when it is going to come. Sometimes we don't even know what it is. And sometimes, it will never come and we're better off that way. There is so much unknown. Mostly unknown, it seems. Except that rapture rumor. That that was false, was known. Well, I guess not by everyone. Sad.

In other news, I'd been craving some Major 7th chords and "Waiting in Vain" hit the spot. I admire Bob Marley so much. Artistically, I want to be just like him. Make an impact. Help people think things in a more positive and uplifting way. Advocate for peace. Help people get along better in the world. Leave something behind when I'm gone. Lead by example. Be eclectic. Speak freely. Put on an entertaining show. OK, busy day. Gotta go.

Dylan Avery appears on background conversation following a pocket dial of yours truly. His meter is currently at 23:28 and counting. Chat on, Oh Dyllie one.

All that remains of my ailment this past week or two is this raspy voice and occasional cough. All things considered, that's not so bad. Limits the singing ability a bit though. That's not going to stop me from having a nice band practice here in a few on a Sunday afternoon. Well, gotta go sing. Dig the blues thing. Kisses.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 178 The Greens of Mind "Harmony Mountain" - 6-8-2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnU0ljYPIwo

The next excerpt from The Greens of Mind's June 8, 2009 show at The Athenaeum Music and Arts Library in La Jolla, CA is "Harmony Mountain." The Greens of Mind feature myself on guitar, Barbara Tolbert on vocals, Charlotte James on violin and guitar and Justin Mills on cello. "Harmony Mountain" was another of the tunes I wrote out the outset of this band that fit very nicely with our group's instrumentation. This show was filmed and produced by Steve Laub and Dave Foster of Laubster Video. Great work, Laubster.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 178 "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding?" - Elvis Costello
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KO7YbJ2VRJM

Was really wanting to do "Macho Man," today to continue operation 365's salute to the life of the great "Macho Man" Randy Savage. Not really feeling in a macho man mood right now, my new Facebook status picture, notwithstanding. Probably should have recorded it yesterday while the iron was hot. I have a bit of a headache after a delicious pitcher of margaritas with Richard Romero this morning with Mexican breakfast. Hmmmm... what to do? what to do?

OK, I kinda knew what I was going to do, or at least what I was going to try to do, and it worked out. Elvis Costello rule. I am hoping yo go on an Elvis kick and get to know all his work much better. Now I mostly know the greatest hits, but boy, are they great. "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding?" sums up a lot of what I think about often. Could there be a less popular view these days in America than peace. I think not Basically, if you are pro-peace, people think you are an asshole, or worse. It saddens me and sickens me, and I don't know which more. What a dream it would have been to live in a time when it wasn't like that.

My voice is still a little shot from coughing for two weeks, but I am feeling much better besides that. Apologies, if you're into tat sort of thing. I am MCing an event called "Sight and Sound" tonight at Queen Bee's in North Park. I am excited to get on stage and participate in what I'm sure will be a fabulous event. It is being put on by a guy named Jon Block. He has been doing a lot of good work in the community for awhile now and I excited to work with im. In fact, that is the main reason I am doing the show, but it will be lots of fun. Hopefully, my voice will sound all right. At least, I'm not singing.

Hail, Elvis Costello, and a grand comeback for peace, love AND understanding. We ned it bad. What do ya know? There was no rapture. Gimme a break.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 178 "Apologize For Your Lies, Rapture Guy"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BU0Jm4x2dwQ

So the rapture guy clown, get all these gullible people all disturbed and nothing happens and then what... I'm waiting. How about an apology. An oops A "sorry, I was wrong, didn't mean to get you all upset for nothing." Of course, not. The only thing even close to as unpopular as peace these days is taking personal responsibility, fessing up when you make a mistake and saying sorry I was wrong. Remember that last President Bush who led us into a war with Iraq on the story that Iraq was involved in 9/11 and that they has weapons of mass destruction. Well, either of those were true. A million people died in Iraq. Did he apologize? Of course not, Makes you kind of wonder if it was on purpose.

Even in situations way less extreme than that, people just do what they want often and if it hurts others, than too bad. If it's good for the President, it's good for everyone. Did you know there are international laws again killing unarmed people (see Osama)? Has anybody heard of a trial or proof? These are all relics of yesteryear, like peace, accountability. It is tragic. So here, Operation 365 is calling for this goofball, Campy or CAmping or whatever his name is, to say, "Sorry, everybody, I was wrong. If I scared you, or you spent tons of money on provisions or whatnot, my bad. I am just a foolish, old coot. Next time, i pull this nonsense, please don't listen to me. I am not to be trusted."

And to those of you who did believe him, really? Are you serious? Geez. Come on.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 177 "Rapture" by Blondie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HA_h0nQcJo

Some jack-ass is reporting that the "Rapture" is coming tomorrow. I dont really follow the crap on TV so I know little more than that and I certainly don't believe it, but the word has gotten around, so here is my two cents. Nonsense. I don't even know what rapture is really, but as I understand it, it means the world ends, and everyone who doesn't believe a certain thing suffers forever, or something. No chance in hell (irony alert) on any of it and anyone who thinks otherwise, is a giant dumbass. Take that for judgment.

Let's entertain this rapture silliness for a moment, and only a moment. If it IS true, what a waste of time this Operation 365 has been. I have spent tons of the last 6 months ever doing videos that no one is ever going to see. Ha! That might be true anyway, but at least I'll have a world to live in. Some people are so stupid, and even worse, hateful. That's what I have to say about the latest garbage that disguises itself as news. I did a totally different take on Blondie's "Rapture." Enjoy it quick, in case the whole world ends tomorrow. Oh, please...

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 177 All Hail The "Macho Man" Randy Savage
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyTb-BPVnDg

Operation 365 was very saddened to learn of the loss of the greatest wrestler ever, "Macho Man" Randy Savage. It is quite possible that I acquired some of my love for larger than life entertainment and flamboyant outfits from none other that the "Macho Man." What kind of man has the confidence to call himself "Macho Man"? Have you ever listened to the lyrics to that song. If not, listen tomorrow, because I plan to continue my tribute to Randy Savage tomorrow with that very Village People cover.

Randy Savage ruled. I can't believe he's gone. Just months ago, I had a business idea aout a travelling circus of sorts featuring popular B-celebrities and the whole idea was basically I travel with Randy Savage and to me, that made the idea great. In his honor (and perhaps his image) I will attempt to use this loss as a catalyst. The entertainment needs a new flamboyant larger than life freak and I think I'm just that guy. These are large wrestling boots to fill, granted, but I am ready to try to step up, all the way up to the top rope. At which point, I will deliver metaphorical flying elbow to the entertainment world. People need some inspiration and insight more than ever now and I'm ready to do whatever it takes to be "macho." Rest in peace, great superstar. I will now go watch your classic Wrestlemania match with Ricky Steamboat and dream of what it would have been like to meet a man as macho as you. Peace

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 176 The Greens of Mind "What's Lost..." - 6-8-2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pN3DI37G-CM

I will be sharing this entire set of The Greens of Mind at The Athenaeum Music and Arts Library in La Jolla, CA on June 8, 2009. This our second song that, "What's Lost In The Word That We Don't Say." The Greens of Mind. The Greens of Mind are myself on guitar, Barbara Tolbert on vocals, Charlotte James on violin and guitar and Justin Mills on cello. Occasionally we switch it up and play different instruments, but usually that is how the lineup looks.

The amazing cinematography in these clips comes courtesy of Steve Laub and Dave Foster of Laubster Video. A huge thanks to those guys. All Greens members are songwriters in their own right. "What's Lost In The Word That We Don't Say" was written by me. It was one of the first tunes we did in The Greens. Enjoy.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 176 "Get Behind The Mule" by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxDTLh8t2rQ

"Get Behind The Mule" is one of the many awesome tunes on Tom Waits' 1999 album "Mule Variations." This one, like many of Waits later material was co-written by Waits and his wife, Kathleen Brennan. Tom Waits is great and I'm not just saying that because it rhymes. I saw him live once, in Oakland, on this tour. He got like four encores and he deserved each one of them.

I am finally beginning to recover from my sickness. My voice is still a little ragged, so I decided to go with it and do a Waits tune. For those who don;t know, Tom Waits has a distinctive, raspy voice. He rules. He proves there is no one way thing to do things and that true creativity acknowledges no limits. Nice work, Tom.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 175 The Greens of Mind "Escaping From Alcatraz" - 6-8-2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nswgkfdGO4Y

Folks, Operation 365 is going green, and by that I mean, I plan to share a bunch of stuff I recorded with a little group play with once in a while called, The Greens of Mind. The Greens of Mind are myself on guitar, Barbara Tolbert on vocals, Charlotte James on violin and guitar and Justin Mills on cello. Occasionally we switch it up and play different instruments, but usually that is how the lineup looks.

The first several clips I'll be sharing are from a very special show we did on June 8, 2009 at the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library in La Jolla, CA. I developed a very positive relationship with the folks ta The Athenaeum while writing my Master's Thesis at San Diego State University about the long and distinguished history of La Jolla's first library. This led to the Acoustic Evenings at The Athenaeum Series with Jefferson Jay, where some of San Diego's finest acoustic musicians were showcased in one's the area's finest rooms for music. All of the shows were fabulous and I hope to do more work with the Athenaeum before too long.

The amazing cinematography in these clips comes courtesy of Steve Laub and Dave Foster of Laubster Video. A huge thanks to those guys. All Greens members are songwriters in their own right. "Escaping From Alcatraz" was written by me. It was once described by a friend as an "anti-love song." I don't know if that is true, but I found it interesting enough to share here.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 175 "Piper" - Phish
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MacZrFNt-E0

Still sick. It's getting to me. I've been laying around all the time and I'm still not getting better. Booo... No idea what cover I'm going to do. Hopefully something simple comes to me soon.

OK. I've chosen one of my many favorite Phish tunes, "Piper." It was actually written by Phish frontman Trey Anastasio and his long-time lyricist Tom Marshall. You can tell the lyrics are Marshall's because they essentially make no sense. Maybe that's a little harsh. perhaps some of his lyrics makke some sense, sometimes, if you really read a lot into them. Anyway, that certainly doesn't make this song any less awesome. Please do not mistake my enthusiasm for this song for me saying my acoustic version does this song any justice. It doesn't. Well, maybe, a tad, at most. Go essay on yourself, JJ, and Tom Marshall. Come on.. YOu are right voice inside my head. I recant that whole first paragraph. The version my brother and I say on Halloween in Vegas in 1998... Now that version did "Piper" justice. I'm just saying.

Shout-outs to the great pro wrestler "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, who managed to star in movies despite being illiterate and coined the phrase,"Just when you think you know the answers, I change the questions." I loved that one. A second shout-out goes to Piper, adorable pooch of Destructo and Amanda Bunny. And just in case that's not enough, here is something I watched on TV when I was a small child. Maybe that explains something. I don;t know.

It's been a rough week or two. I'm not gonna lie. I've still sick, lost my job... I could go on, but I won't. What we songwriters have to get us through these tough times, are songs. It is a therapy of sorts and it works.

Now I haven't lost perspective entirely or anything. I am thrilled to be the uncle of a healthy, baby boy and I love my girlfriend lots and lots, but these feelings got to get out somehow. Thanks for listening. Soon, I hope to resume with our regularly scheduled program.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 174 The Jefferson Jay Show: Episode 2; Part 2 - "Prelude To Parade" - 2-24-2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z0CcjKLUm0

Here is Part 2 of my much anticipated The Jefferson Jay Show: Episode 2. This footage was filmed by Dylan Avery. Those of you who can somehow remember what happened in Part One. If you can't, go here to catch up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8SdwZaWoRA

My crew (Blowski, Dylan, Jeff Dewine) and I, were participating in the Mardi Gras parade along with the folks at govavi.com. They are doing very well here, running a business that helps adults play kickball, and other important stuff like that. Here in Episode 2, we were all preparing to head on the float for the first of two little parades that night. Here, we see the sights and get to know some of the crazy characters of govavi, including the guy in charge and a dude I know who talks about being a Buddhist and a soldier. Did I mention our float went right after the Cheetah's float. Cheetah's is a local stripping establishment. Enjoy the festivities found here in Part 2, "Prelude to Parade."

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 174 "Nectar From The Vine" by Wes Davis
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU4goJ0Pr80

"Nectar From The Vine" is another of my favorite Wes Davis tunes by my songwriting friend, Wes Davis. He has many. You may recall, we went on a Northern California tour in early April. It was tons of fun. I have been sick for a week. It is sucking. I have been sitting around today, hoping to finally recover. Do you like my sick uniform? I was going to try to do something simple to not add more stress to my system. I tried, "Don't Worry, Be Happy," and some other tune, but it just wasn't happening. What song do I love and know on banjo? "Nectar From the Vine."

This tune is great. Some of my favorite parts of the shows on the tour were joining Wes for "Nectar From the Vine." I hope he likes my version and I hope you do too. Please check out Wes Davis at wesdavismusic.com or on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/westernplains

Thank you, Wes.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 174 "Kltpzyxm"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTXh5nJky4E

Yesterday, I was trying to throw down my "A Baby Boy Is Born," in honor of my new nephew, Jacob. I was struggling. I haven't played much piano since being liberated from my teaching assignment. I was anxious and rusty. So I busted out this piece of songery to try to loosen myself up a bit, and what do ya know, it worked. Someone I played tunes with long ago, would describe this as "in the key of Jeff." That phrase predates me playing an actual instrument and adjusting my name to Jefferson, so you know it was a long time ago. Some things, very few, never change.

Some people may think that this is a wild song so I named it with a crazy bunch of random letters, 'cause it'd be fitting. Others will know that's not so. I loved the "Super Friends" cartoon when I was a boy and one one of the many characters I liked was Mr. Mxyzptlk. This enigmatic, floating elf type guy, gave Superman fits, but only until one of the Super Friends could trick his silly ass, into saying his name backwards, at which he would be yanked back to the 5th dimension. Wherever that is. I always thought that was wild, interesting, and as close to random as you're ever gonna get. So... here it is, my solo piano explosion, "Kltpzyxm." Learn it if you want, piano virtuosos, but do so at your own risk.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 173 Interview With A Baby - 1-26-2010
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmAwp86-f6M

Today is a baby day on the 365. I became an uncle for the first time. Congratulations to my brother John and his wife Kim on the first child, a beautiful baby boy, Jacob Anthony Gottlieb. Here, I interview another of my favorite babies in the world, one Morgan Riley Stevens. He is joined on stage by his folks, Joe and Jen Stevens, who together comprise the band, Beer Money. Morgan is a adorable lad. A few times, I interviewed him on stage at my Open Mic. It was always very revealing.

"You can't argue with cute." - Joe Stevens

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 173 "Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)" by John Lennon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mK6KXKZwPAI

This is John Lennon's beautiful song, "Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)." My brother, (who with a huge assist from his wife, Kim), had his first son, Jacob, this morning, asked me earlier this week, which cover I was going to do for the 365 on Jacob's birthday. I said probably "Beautiful Boy." When I went and listened to it and learned it, I knew I made the right choice. What a song! You can feel love he feels for his boy, Sean. What a precious gift! I can't imagine Sean doesn't cherish it to this day. I'm sure he always will.

I did a version or two when I learned it yesterday. I have been sick for almost a week. I thought my version from yesterday was OK, but when I re-watched it today, I wasn't thinking Jacob was going to be cherishing that version from his sick Uncle JJ when he got older, so I did it again just now. Still sick, but I hope it's a little better. I have a little love with my beautiful boy, Nigel, at the end. We are blessed indeed.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 173 "A Baby Boy Is Born (Hooray Today)"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4A5crUVrZfs

Life is full of comings and goings. One door opens. Another closes and of course, vice versa. This is the nature of life. It is perplexing and consistant. Enigmatic and interesting. Always changing.

So my first nephew was born today. Jacob Anthony Gottlieb. He is son to my brother John and my sister-in-law Kim. he was born at 7:58 EST, this morning, May 16, 2011 and weighed a robust 8.64 pounds at that time. Jacob is named after two of the greatest men I've ever known.

The name Jacob is for my grandfather, my mom's dad. Everyone called him Jack. He was an honest man with a firm convictions. He knew what he believed in and what he didn't. He was always extremely loving to all his grandchildren and we all loved him very much.

The name Anthony is for my for my friend Anthony Michael Russo, who died in 1992. We were seniors in high school then. It was a sordid ordeal. Isn't it always in such circumstances? Tony practically lived in our house growing up and developed unique and deep personal bonds with every member of our household. To say we were devastated when he past, is an enormous understatement. I am honored, touched, humbled, and delighted... moved, by this whole experience. By the birth of my nephew. By the honor bestowed on my grandpa and Tony in his naming. By the growth of our family, and the gift of a new life, to my brother and Kim, his incredible wife. To Jacob.

Life is full of twists and turns, each more surprising and revolutionary than the next. Never have I had such a thin grip on what truly lies, directly before me. What I am relieved to know is Jacob is here. He's healthy and he's gonna hold it down, on behalf of all of us, for some time. He has two loving parents who will raise him right and two incredible namesakes, who will be looking out for him always, in ways we can't possibly understand.

Congratulations John and Kim and Jacob. I love you all so much.

At the end of this version of "A Baby Boy Is Born (Hooray Today)," a plane flies by. I thought about that plane as I finished preparing this video... Sometimes, the plane arrives. Other times, it has to fly away. It can't do one without the other. The plane needs both to do either.

So do we.

Done.

Whoa.

Jacob Anthony Gottlieb.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 172 Steve Hunsberger, Paul Ruiz, Leanne Pearl and Me, 5-14-2011
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sa4ucww9EO0

This was from a little jam we had last night at my humble apartment. It was good time. Many more friends and neighbors arrived shortly thereafter and my place got far more packed that usual. Catching up with UMASS pal Dennis Moore was highlight, but there were many. Nice work as always by Nigel the puppy on cuteness. Paul Ruiz plays trumpet and from the left, we have Steve Hunsberger, (singing a song about his puppy, Abby,) myself (JJ) and, Leanne Pearl, my sweetie.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 172 "Take This Job and Shove It" by David Allen Coe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X86NkemTck0

So I'm doing my best to get past it, but I'm still a bit upset about the way I got railroaded out of my job. God forbid you ask the Board of Education to pay you fairly or the work that you are doing. "Good-bye!" Fine. Everything happens for a reason. One door closes, another opens... All that. Being sick still, I'm sure, is not helping either. So I was trying to take a nap today and I got all ticked off. I calmed quickly, but then I came home and recorded this classic song. Predictable, it made me feel somewhat better.

I learned "Take This Job and Shove It" was written by David Allen Coe and popularized by Johnny Paycheck. Hopefully, this will be just the incentive I need to follow my dreams and do what I want to do most anyway, which is, roughly ( and I stress roughly), this. Creating, offering ideas, solutions, assistance, entertainment.. Something that makes the world a better place and isn;t so full of bureaucratic doody that the stench never comes off.

How can youtube think that doody's not a word? Tell that to generations of kids. youtube, like the Board of Education, is clearly not thinking about the kids. At least youtube's not pretending to be.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 172 "Everything's OK"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obAfafs1Y98

I awoke from almost sleeping the other night, 'cause this whole tune was in my head. "Everything's OK" was my attempt to make myself feel better and find perspective relating to the unceremonious way my most recent stint of teaching concluded. It worked somewhat. All things considered, between getting totally screwed and being sick, I've had a pretty good week. Having a wonderful girlfriend helps a lot. Having terrific friends and two cute poochies does too. I am scheduled to become an uncle, for the first time, at 5AM PST tomorrow. That matters a lot more than money, even when you;re scared 'cause you don't have any.

I jumped out of bed, got dressed, accidentally tore my shirt to threads, (long story) and busted out "Everything's OK", more or less, as it appears here. I am glad I have developed these skills. Being able to get stuff off you chest helps a lot too. Everything's OK, even when it really doesn't seem that way, if you have faith.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 171 Jefferson and The Soul Man Toast - 1-29-2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CNPqrbmnRo

Here I enjoy a toast with one of my best friends ever, The Soul Man. We have known each other for almost ten years and he has been playing music with me in my band for about 8 or 9 of 'em. He is one of the coolest dudes I've ever known. He is 92 years old and he has such a centered, positive attitude about pretty much everything that it is infectious. He loves playing music and "the groove." He and I go back a ways and I expect we will go a long ways more. I love The Soul Man.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 171 "Blackbird" - by John Lennon and Paul McCartney
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrZsFAQYPg4

I have been playing guitar for 16 years now, but to my Mom, whether I can play guitar or not is a question test and that question is "Can you play Blackbird?" I used to consider that the Holy Grail. One day I was a t a party at my friend Bill Thomas's house and I said I couldn't learn it. Then when we returned to the living room, a guy happened to be playing it and I learned it on the spot. It was a col day. Eventually, I played it for my mom and more or less forgot it. So today is my Mom's birthday. When I asked her if there was anything I could do for her on the 365 for her birthday, she predictably replied "Blackbird." So although, I am still pretty sick her this Saturday, I practiced and got it going for Ma.

I'm not gonna lie. When recording time came, it took me roughly three million tries. This song is tough. Thank God it's only two minutes and eighteen seconds. So I got it eventually, in one take even. Happy Birthday Ma. I hope you enjoy it. Maybe this birthday presentation can make you a convert to the 365. That's this, Ma. Stick around til the end for some funny and poignant outtakes from my million other tries and a unique window into the reality that is my life.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 171 "Raindrop in the Ocean"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smuqM0xuuCA

So re-learning and playing "Blackbird," was not enough for me to do for my Mom on her birthday here. How could it be from the guy who brings you Operation 365 when any reasonable person would agree that Operation 100, with 3 videos a day, is WAY more than enough. Not for me. I like to do things differently. I like to them ways other people wouldn't even consider trying. Sometimes, this is a burden. Other times, it's a gift. It's like life in that way. Especially for me, considering it IS my life.

So I wrote this tune for my Mom here today. How do you thank the person who gave you life and raised you? Is there any adequate way? I think not. That why this song is called "Raindrop in the Ocean," which is short for "Thanking You's a Raindrop in the Ocean." There is never enough I could say. I love you and thank you so much for everything you've done for me. I hope you enjoy this attempt here to express the thanks that can not possible be conveyed in words or song. At least that's the point, I was aiming to make, here now. I love you. Happy Birthday Ma.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 170 Justin Mills - "Destruction Device" - 12-11-2008
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCfgI1m-dsI

This is close to as far back as I go in my filming of stuff, within a week. I have had "Destruction Device" in my head for ages. I would learn it if it wasn't such a task and I still might do it anyway. I love this tune. Justin Mills is one of my favorite songwriters in the world. I was honored to play his tunes with him for the while that I did. Here I join Justin on my cute little Ashbory bass, as I often did on Thursdays, back then. Wes Davis, fresh back from Tahiti, sat in on tambourine. These were happy times. I always felt like I was f'ing Justin's tunes up on bass, but he was positive about it, so I played on. It is really hard to sing and play bass at the same time, probably the hardest thing I've ever tried to do in music. It's much harder than singing and playing drums. I hit one bad note each on bass and vox on this take. I guess that's not so bad. I tried to make up for it with some triplet action right after on the bass. Ha!

Incidentally, my adorable puppy Nigel, also happens to be a destruction device. Ate my headphones this week. Eats leashes, couches, rocks, wood, my car. Even tried to eat glass a couple times. Kids...

So trying to remain on the quick tip here,… My banjo was right beside me so I picked it up. I went to this web page, http://www.jbott.com/begin.html A man named Jim Bottorff puts easy banjo tunes there and that is how I wound up playing “La Cucaracha”. I had no idea it even had a verse, or if the melody I sang for it is the right one. Viva Mexico.

I am literally sick and tired. Feeling alright in the head, but sick and tired, so I am trying to do things on the quick tip here tonight. Maybe set a record for time spent 365ing for a day. Here is the song I play first every time I take out my sitar. I made it up. When I took it out to play, the sitar was a bit out of tune. I didn’t let a lot of the string ring out that I normally would ‘cause I didn’t want to take the time to tune it, but more or less, that is how the song goes. Namaste.

Here I am covering the number one song of the “Portugalia Era,” hands down. I started playing this song because I loved it and because Justin Mills is prone to huge hiatuses in playing out. If you want to hear a song, sometimes, you have to resort to drastic measures. I heard the Port is officially done. Peace out Port. Thanks for a million great times and helping me meet most of my best friends. Maybe we’ll meet again someday. In another time. Under another name. Maybe. Meanwhile, rumors of a Greens of Mind reunion continue to circulate.

NOTE: Blogger.com was down yesterday, so this didn't get to go up until today.

This is a performance by Blair and Kymythy from my final Open Mic at Portugalia on 4-20-2010. The word on the street is my old spot is closing for good real real soon here. My invitation to come back one more time must have got lost in the mail. Yeah, I was feeling a but nostalgic so I visited my lost Port Open Mic and this is what I decided to share. I miss Blair and Kymythy and their consistent goos vibe. Enjoy their version of "Smoke Two Joints," that they played special for 4-20, the stoner's holy holiday.

Was really feeling this jam today. Sang it so loud, it distorted. I had to pull the volume down. What can I say? I was feeling. That Bob Marley is always good for some priceless wisdom. Today he said (when I listened to this song) "when one door closes, another must open." I paraphrased that, Well, I'm ready to go. My "job" door closed and I am ready for my "new job" door to open. Ahhh, life. Thanks Bob.

By virtue of being my special lady, she just won herself an all-expenses paid, dream vacation to New Jersey. Congratulations honey.

Operation 365... Blog 160

Sometimes things just go wrong. It's a bummer when it happens of course, but it's just part of life. If you believe everything happens for a reason, like I do, you just learn to accept these unsavory bits of reality and move forward as fluidly as you can. I have been enjoying teaching music to the kids these last couple months. I tried to get paid like a teacher instead of a sub, because I was teaching and not subbing and it's ended up costing me my job. Everybody agrees I was doing a great job; my colleagues, my supervisors, the schools, he teachers, the kids, but in education that is not what matters. It is bureaucracy and that matters more. It's always been that way and always will be. That's why I tend to get nervous when I think of myself as a "music teacher," as I had begun to do these last few weeks. Oh well. It was time to lead the kids through their end-of-the-year concerts, but apparently it's not that time for me. They had contracted me through June 8th. You know what they say about folks whose word is worthless. A return to subbing awaits. I wish I could celebrate that. I keep reminding myself, Everything happens for a reason. It will work out. Somehow.

Robin Lee said "Have faith where you are at hits moment and you'll never go astray." I like the sound of that and I LOVE Robin Lee. It took me quite some time to locate the song that this quote is from, "Good Guys." I have a lot of Robin footage and apparently, she didn't play this tune as often as I thought. I love it. It's one of her best. There is a lot of wisdom in there and right now, I need some Robin wisdom, for sure! I hope it does it for you too.

Here, Robin is joined, once again, by Jack Davidson on lead guitar. Thanks to Jack for saying "Good Guys," when Robin asked him what to play at the start of this clip. Otherwise, I'd still be lookin'.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 166 "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" by Wallis Willis
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFjEp5a34vE

So, because of all that stuff I wrote about in the blog (jeffersonjay.blogspot.com) I had the blues today. So it seemed a natural fit to go to "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" to commiserate. My lovely girlfriend Leanne is doing her best to cheer me up. She's doing an excellent job and here, she joins me to brighten up "Swing Low" as she does every room she enters. God bless 'er.

When researching after the fact, I read all this on wikipedia and thoufht it was really cool, so here it is for you:

["Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" was first written by Wallis Willis, a Choctaw freedman in the old Indian Territory, sometime before 1862. He was inspired by the Red River, which reminded him of the Jordan River and of the Prophet Elijah's being taken to heaven by a chariot. Many sources (see Songs of the underground railroad) claim that this song and "Steal Away"—also composed by Willis—had lyrics that referred to the Underground Railroad, the resistance movement that helped slaves escape from the South to the North and Canada.

Alexander Reid, a minister at a Choctaw boarding school, heard Willis singing these two songs and transcribed the words and melodies. He sent the music to the Jubilee Singers of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. The Jubilee Singers popularized the songs during a tour of the United States and Europe.

The song enjoyed a resurgence during the 1960s Civil Rights struggle and the folk revival; it was performed by a number of artists. Perhaps the most famous performance during this period was that by Joan Baez during the legendary 1969 Woodstock festival.]

Cool, huh? That's a pretty significant tune. Thanks Wallis Willis. I'm glad you got free. Thanks for sharing all that feeling and emotion. Just started reading a little bit about those Choctaw freedmen. Wow, that's a rough go. Oh, holy perspective.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 165 Jefferson Jay - "May" - 2-12-2010
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krOkSFGIE9I

Today is the 165th day of Operation 365. What significance does that have, you may ask? Well, it means there are only 200 days left 'til Operation 365 is completed. Can you imagine? I can't. That's why I am posting this song "May" today. May it happen. We will see.

Here is my song "May," recorded on February 12, 2010. It was a new song at the time. It is a song that asks the universe for good things to happen in the summer ahead. I am resubmitting that request to the universe here. May summer bring sunshine, light and as much momentum as I can muster towards that elusive, number 365.

And Happy Mother's Day to my mom, who is a May baby herself. May she have a wonderful summmer. Thank you for everything, Ma. This one is dedicated to you.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 165 "The Dukes of Hazzard" by Waylon Jennings
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUEwnKTZ3KU

I have two main memories of this one. The first, of course, occurs, in the early eighties, eagerly awaiting every Friday night, when I could watch "The Incredible Hulk," "The Dukes of Hazzard," and "Dallas" with my dad. At one point, I joined Cub Scouts. It met on Friday night. That wasn't going to work. I bailed shortly thereafter. I was willing to hang with Anthony Dionisio, Chris Capone, and his mom, when I could be home watching The Dukes. I never wanted to be a WeBlo anyway. That's what they called the advanced level of Cub Scouts. Seriously. I think that was maybe the first thing I ever quit in my life. Today this day, I am a huge proponent of quitting shit that sucks. No offense, Chris Capone's mom.

The biggest memory of this song though, for me, is from the late nineties though. Back then I lived in San Francisco and I didn't like it very much. I found people to be very unhappy and uncool. Everybody acted like they were cool but hey were bad actors, and I wasn't buying it one bit. So for fun, I would go to Marin County and see my friends' band, Jumbo. They were very popular in that area at the time and every time I would go see them I would have a blast. I would get to sit in sometimes, sing a little, socialize with the ladies. I loved it. They had a huge house too and we would always have a blast when we got together. SO many great memories. Well, they covered this tune often. This one, "Fat Albert," "Fairies Wear Boots, "Sesame Street," "We're An American Band." They picked really cool covers. It added to their awesome show. Noah King would sing lead on "The Dukes of Hazzard," and it always gave me a thrill.

I still love the Jumbo dudes. Don;t see them as much as I used to, but we created a fond place in my memory that will be with me forever. Thanks dudes. Belchertown Power. They are all from Belchertown, MA. I met a few of 'em, way back when I was in a band at UMASS with their buddy/drummer Jesse Rudolph, another awesome dude. Jesse was the first dude I was ever in a band with who actually listened to what everyone was playing. In a way, discovering that was like being born for me. Playing music with people who don't listen, no matter how good they are, is not as rewarding, as you might imagine.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 165 "Up and Down"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuhLRl7CF7g

I wrote "Up and Down" many years ago. It took me a minute to re-remember it. I still think the instrumental mid-section is slightly different, but I think that's alright. This song is about the ups and down of daily life. When you know what you should do and what is up, but are still struggling to get yourself to do it. I was in that place for quite a time. Not that I've got everything worked out now, but I am much happier than I was, say 12 years ago, and for some reason, that is on my mind here today. I like this song. Not sure I played it out ever, but it's got some nice music. A little capo action too.

This song theorizes, like 11:59 to midnight, there is some moment and up and down become each other, "when all things turn around," if you will. Sometimes it's seems easier to go around the back way, go so far down you get to up, then it would be clawing and scratching back from nothing. Kinda like digging your way to China. This is a theoretical song. I put it out in a little thing I did in 2004 called "RANDOM EP." Before I put CDS out, and even a little bit since, I still record things that I don't really share with many people, basically the opposite of the 365. This song was on one of those things. I think I wrote it in like '99 though. Lots of ups and down then for me.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 164 Chimney Fish (acoustic) - "Junkyard" - 4-15-2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zj28BMJt8cE

Here are my old friends, Chimney Fish, playing their song "Junkyard," acoustic-style. I always thought this tune was called, "Take It Away, Now," seems like a sensible name for, it, but I am mistaken. At least according to what Brett said before the start of the clip. Chimney Fish are/were Brett Walling on vocals, Jeff Shaefer on lead guitar, Andy DAvis on drums (in this case, cajon) and Luke Oskam on bass. They broke up a little while back, but they were mainstays of my program for some time. I still remember the first day I met 'em. They are joined for this performance by Orv on flute and The Soul Man on guiro. The Soul Man always played with Chimney Fish. What band of strapping young lads doesn't want a ninety-something dude scraping along with them at all times? well, Chimney Fish did. Ahh, yes those were the days.

This was recorded on April 15 2009 as part of my two-day little birthday celebration. Lots of my amigos came out. We did this show on the 15th and then my actual birthday show on the 16th doubled as my CD release party, for my record "Blue; A Kid's Album." There appears to be some synergy here, some irony, perhaps, and today is Jeff Shaefer's birthday. He is 25 today. I am planning on attending a little birthday bash, being thrown in his honor. I am sure I will get to see these here Fishes and some other folks I used to see often, but I see rarely now. Peace to Fishes and Happy birthday Jeff!

NOTE: Notice how Brett starts waving the middle finger, upside-down over his head as the song ends. I like that for some reason.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 164 "Blue Suede Shoes" by Carl Perkins
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Npcj4W_vXv8

I've been wanting to do "Blue Suede Shoes" for some time now. What a fun song! It has special meaning to me as a guy who used to sport a pair of, you guess it, blue suede shoes. I played this shoe convention gig in Vegas with my old drummer Phil. I hit is off with this cool cat, Steve Rodriguez, who used to play with a legendary SD band called The Dragons. Long story short, he hooked me up with a sweet pair of blue suede shoes. I wore 'em t'til I couldn't wear 'em any more. It's not quite the same thing to walk around wearing a pair of tattered blue suede shoes. Pretty sure they're in my closet still. May the should make a cameo. Thanks Steve.

Sensing a once-a-lifetime opportunity, I bring you, cute puppy Nigel dancing in my blue suede shoes. Stick around 'til the end for that if you're sure your heart can handle the cuteness. Nigel is a star. Speaking of stars, while Carl Perkins wrote , it was made most popular by the King of Rock 'N Roll, Elvis Presley. I'm convinced Nigel's the Elvis of Dogs. Maybe with a little bit of Justin Bieber thrown in, whoever that is.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 164 "Bob Green and What Happened to Rita"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLq-7loUskk

So today I decided to play a few chords and sing about whatever was on my mind. I honestly didn't even know what was on my mind. Apparently, my former college partner (not like that) Bob Green and what happened to Rita on "Dexter" are what was on my mind. Who knew? Certainly, not I.

So I threw down a little stream of consciousness there for ya. Can't imagine I'll ever play this tune again, but you never know. That's the whole thing with life, its' unpredictability. If anybody who knows Bob Green sees this, please tell him I said "Hi!" Thanks.

Shouts out to my song "April," and every other song that's D C G, for helping me get this done. Oh, I'm so not over what happened to Rita. I don't know if I ever will be. I'm not ready to talk about it.

Here's one of my bands, Acoustic Booze, live on October 15, 2009, playing one of our signature numbers, "Manhunt." The Booze just found out that we are going to play the Ocean Beach Street Fair, coming up here in the Summer, so that is exciting for us Boozers.

I have been drumming in the band for over two years now and it's great fun. Leading the band, is my nearest and dearest pal, Blowski. He is backed up here by Patricia Mueller on keys, Adrianna Martin-Morningstar on vocals, The Soul Man on guiro and Dylan Avery on bass. Dylan recently relocated to pursue his promising film career and we all wish him huge success there. These days, Richard Romero has our back on bass and Paul Ruiz holds it down on the trumpet. It's tons of fun being in the Booze. I love my bandmates and that's what makes music fun.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 162 "Charge" by Tommy Walker
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74UQ2FzEadE

"Charge," I learned, is a fanfare. Fanfare must mean catchy little riff you hear at ballgames. Figured I'd lighten things up a bit around here and what does that better than sports? Not much that I know. Yes, sports is a great distraction because you can learn stuff rom it but really it doesn't mean anything at all. As someone put it to me recently, my friendly neighbor Nate, it is entertainment. I know have been entertained by yelling "CHARGE!" at the ballgame many times.

Remember when Wilma and Betty used to yell "Charge It!" on The Flintstones. I do. Loved that show.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 162 "Wish Wash" (A Song about Chris Bosh)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boIFPiaIZUA

Sticking with sports motif, I figured I'd salute the NBA play-offs by ripping on noted third banana, Chris Bosh. There are few better ways to undercut someone than by forgetting, or pretending you forgot someone's name. That is pretty much the whole theme here with this one. What did Chris Bosh do to deserve this ridicule? Hmmm... Not really a great answer for that one. Some say he's soft. He signed with the Heat to be their third best player, even though he gets paid like their first. One of my students claimed Bosh averaged 24.9 points per game, but he really averaged 18.7 this season. I don't know. Maybe I'm the one being wishy-washy now. It's fun. I like the words "wish wash." If I had more time, I'd probably write a more involved some, incorporating the words "wish" and "wash" more. Maybe another day. Now that's wishy washy.

Maybe the Miami Heat wish Chris Bosh was better. Maybe they'd love to wash their hands of him. I've heard trade rumors. Maybe they wish they could wash their hands of him and spend that money elsewhere. Maybe on a point guard. Now I'm getting somewhere... I just like the sound of it.

Wish Wash.

Wish Wash.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 161 Chimney Fish (acoustic) - 3-10-2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEvxPjY4-wQ

Here are long-time stalwarts of Jefferson Jay programming, back in the day, The Chimney Fish. In this clip, they are performing acoustic-style at my Open Mic on March 10, 2009. They have since broken up. Brett Walling was the primary songwriter and lead vocalist for the group. Andy Davis plays cajon here, with Jeff Shaefer on lead guitar and Luke Oskam, on bass. I was a big Chimney Fish fan and had many good times kicking it with all those dudes. I hope they're doing well. I read on Facebook that there's going to be a 25th birthday party for Jeff coming up soon. I will have to do my best to attend that fiesta.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 161 "Manifesting Light From Darkness"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebwMoyyDMRA

This song I wrote today. In case you hadn't noticed, I have been making up many of the original songs I have been posting for the 365 lately. It is often easier to do that, for me, than it would be to try to quickly recreate some old song I wrote awhile back, that I half forgot. SO here is today's offering. It is deliberately manic hit, as I attempt to manifest positive outcomes from what can seem to be a harrowing landscape.

I tell my students they can do whatever they want, if they believe they can do it, if they put their mind to it and keep working. I believe that. We need to think positive thoughts. So, this song starts a little dark, and then brightens up real quick on purpose. Why sit in darkness when you could forging your way into light?

Special thanks to Nigel the puppy for being so damn cute all the time.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 161 "The Star-Spangled Banner" by Francis Scott Key

In a revelation that may surprise a few of you, I love my country. Am I disappointed, perhaps even terrorized, by some of the actions they take on a daily basis? Absolutely. Horrified, in fact. My understanding that it is my right as an American to disagree with some of thew things my nation does. I pay taxes. I am in favor of peace.

That being said, I cherish, each instant I have here in this beautiful land. I appreciate so many aspects of our nation and its history. That is why I care to speak my mind and offer my educated opinions. Some say, "why don't you just leave if you dislike it so much?" I say, what would have happened if our founding fathers had just left instead of fighting for liberty. What would have happened if the freed African slaves had just left and gone back to Africa like many suggested they should? What would have happened if women, frustrated by their inability to procure equal rights for generations had all just left? What would have happened if they wave after wave of immigrants that arrived on our shores had all just left? Would America be a better nation for it?

I love America because I CAN speak freely. I can, right?

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 160 Jason Burleson - "If Life Were A Minute" - 3-10-2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lOXSrH1QVY

This is Jason Burelson's song, "If Life Were A Minute," recorded at my Open Mic on March 10, 2009. If life were a minute, would you spend celebrating that someone died? Would you spend it killing someone? I didn't think so. Well, life's not a minute. What's the difference? Do you think that you have time for stuff like that? Apparently, a lot of people do. Life is a minute. What, no one told you? If the world was made in 6 days, like The Bible says, it may be even less. Regardless of what The Bible says (Thou shalt not kill), life is precious and karma exists. See Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. for more information.

In other news, stay til the end to hear the great Robin Lee sing the melody of the song she wanted Jason Burleson to play next, "Today's A New Day." He played it, and I posted it, two months ago. It is available here. Peace. Is there a less hip sentiment these days than "peace"?Not that I can tell.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 160 "Gonna Fly Now" (The Rocky Theme) by Bill Conti - 3-10-2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBdXhiGEAT8

Here before, Jason Burleson's set on that there March 10, 2009. I "sang" the Rocky Theme song, in honor of Jason's fancy attire at my program. And 'cause he's a winner. It is good fun. It was composed by Bill Conti with lyrics by Carol Connors and Ayn Robbins.

Enjoy a nice slice of my stage banter and fancy outfit, complete with golden shirt and flowing skirt. Rocky was an underdog. Remember when America liked underdogs? Don McLean once sang, " A long, long time ago..."

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 160 "I'm Old-Fashioned, Asking Why."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvY4QsEbSH8

This is my new song. Once again, the lyrics say it all, more or less. I remember when attention to detail, proof, evidence, innocent til proven guilty... I remember when all these American maxims were still in effect.

Bonus rant for blog readers:

I think the only one left is that "America is the greatest nation in the history of the world" nonsense. I remember when the Woodward and Bernsteins of the world, those who sought the truth, were respected. Now, those types are castigated or dismissed. Remember checks and balances? They're dead. Extreme greed and addiction to material things seem to have replaced them seamlessly. It is tragic to me. I think that makes me a patriot. MSNBC, FOX News, the government, they all lie. This is known. It's been this way for some time. See The Gulf Of Tonkin Resolution, The Manhattan Project, and The Tuskeegee Experiment. Watch "Loose Change 9/11: An American Coup," with an open mind, if you dare. Look into weather modification, then look at the sky. If you refuse AND call yourself and American, you don't know what being American is.

If you think believing what you're told and following orders makes you American, you haven't studied much American history. I have. Remember how this country started? The Revolutionary War. If those guys hadn't questioned their "superiors" and stood up for what they thought was right, there would be no America. We'd all be British now. I feel liks I'm arguing with history, climbing uphill, endlessly, wasting my breath. If I wasn't so damn American, I'd have given up a long time ago. Damn being old-fashioned. I feel like I'm still playing Atari, while everyone around me's been bought off with X-Boxes and Play Stations. At least caring's not extinct yet. Then, you'll know, it's too late. Until then, stubborn folks, like me, keep on trying.

Waging peace in a world full of war,

Love,
Jefferson

P.S. Look up what Thomas Jefferson believed in. Skip slavery. He wrote the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution, the documents our country is supposed to be governed by. Is that what you see on the streets? I didn't think so. It's easier to ignore it, watch more Kardashians, and eat more McDonald's, believe what they tell you on TV, and ignore that the news lies. It's much easier. That's why people do it.

NOTE: Gabe Patino, formerly of the band (e)Minds. They played by 24 Hours of Free Music in 2008. He just told me via facebook chat that I have inspired him to enjoy doing covers, showed him to make it his own. I love stuff like that. It keeps me going each day on the 365. Peace, Gabe. I will listen to your "Love Her Madly" soon.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Archives - 159 Jefferson Jams Squatting - 3-28-2010 + bonus jam
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9_pev5O40c

Apparently, I do. Who knew? Would I ever post this if I didn't have a 365 going on here. Good question. Dangerous time to ask good question. Dangerous time.

This was filmed before our set at the Ocean Beach Road Show on March 28, 2010. I liked the sound of the guitar effects. Made me wish I still had that stuff... a little. Dylan Avery (l), Paul Ruiz (also squatting) and The Soul Man (r) also appear. All three are American heroes. Paul Ruiz and The Soul Man served our country in the military. Dylan Avery served our country by making the movie "Loose Change." Please visit www.loosechange911.com or google.com and search "loose change" and inform yourself if you haven't yet already... if you're in to that sort of thing.

Peace

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Covers - 159 "Overkill" by Men At Work
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGMbZJhDfos

"Overkill" is by Colin Hay of Men at Work. I have loved this song since it first came out in 1983. For some reason, I was blessed with the urge to play it today. I believe in peace. I love this song even more now. It really cheered it up. I mean this song literally, figuratively, metaphorically and any other -ally you can come up with I mean it Muhammad Ali. Muhammad Ali was a man of convictions. He stood up for what he believed in. He had some views that were unpopular at the time, but eventually people realize he was right. For this, he became a respected and beloved figure. Around that same time, Martin Luther King Jr. said this.

‎"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Those were the days.

Operation 365 - Jefferson Jay - Originals - 159 "I Don't Wanna Talk About It"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjvraDjMIRY

I think the lyrics say it all.

I Don’t Wanna Talk About It

There’s that big story in the news
They killed a guy and people think it’s great
The people’s on TV who say what happens
That seems to be the end of the debate

I don’t wanna talk about it
I don’t wanna talk about it
I don’t wanna talk about it
I don’t wanna talk about it

Everybody seems to think it’s great
There’s all these bloody jingos all around
Some people want to kill that guy again
It seems to me the world is upside down

I don’t wanna talk about it
I don’t wanna talk about it
I don’t wanna talk about it
I don’t wanna talk about it

Some say that if you don’t agree, you’re nuts
A conspiracy wacko, or a freak
Just ‘cause you’re not repeating what they’re feeding you
Because it’s proof and answers that you seek

I don’t wanna talk about it
I don’t wanna talk about it
I don’t wanna talk about it
I don’t wanna talk about it

BONUS: Some thoughts posted on my Facebook page today:

I need someone to explain to me how Osama did this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwSc7NPn8Ok I am old fashioned. I believe in things like proof and physics.

More... I hope this means we can end all these wars now. Over 1 million Iraqis were killed and Osama didn't kill any of 'em. We've been at war with Afghanistan for years, bombing caves. Osama was in a city in Pakistan. I think when tons of Americans turn into a bunch of bloodthirsty jingos, that's frightening. I don't want to rain on anyone's celebration, but to me, spending billions to kill a guy and killing millions of others in the process, isn't all that festive. Then again, I'm the guy who wrote "Killing's Wrong" so what do you expect?

Janet Truesdail
As a rule, I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I find it REALLY strange that there's no physical evidence. "Buried at sea"? Just a little to convenient. And I've read so many posts today that sound SO bloodthirsty. And many from people who I have to say I was REALLY amazed at. I'm honestly a little sickened. And for those who are ready to call me an America Hater, you'll never meet anyone more red, white and blue. I just happen to believe that ONE of our rights is to question our government and if I'm not mistaken, the founding fathers agreed with me.

Love it, Janet. Agreed. My friend Dave Sandomeno posted this quote MLK quote and I love it. I am about to post my new song "I Don't Wanna Talk About It." Depressing. To some peace is stupid, and questioning is unpatriotic.

Nothing like someone getting killed to pull folks together. Details be damned.
--------
If you believe everything they tell you on TV, today's a great day. Proof, facts, and physics are the relics of yesteryear. Bloodshed and revenge are more fun, if you're into that sort of thing...

Barry Handler
Well, it's hard to just let it go when the guy organizes a team of followers to hijack four commercial airliners and plow them into crowded buildings killing thousands of citizens. That is unless you believe Bush and Israel were really behind the whole thing. The dude went on worldwide TV praising the hijackers for carrying out his orders. Without conducting a formal psych eval in the man that is as good a confession as I have ever heard.

Letting it go and killing a million people in a neighboring nation or two are polar opposites. I choose neither.

I'm not understanding your lyrics, Jeff. Iraq? That was what Bush did wrong. It had nothing to do with 9/11 but was about mythical weapons if mass destruction and Hussein's refusal for UN inspections. That is not too dissimilar to what we are doing to Libya presently. Invading Afghanistan and getting rid of OBL was reasonable.

I agree with MLK and do not rejoice in the death of OBL. It was still the right thing to do. I can't tell you the origin of this quote but remember that "when someone strikes you and you turn the other cheek expect they will strike that side too.". While never a war monger I retain the right to defend myself, my family and friends and my country.

I thought your comment about killing a million people referred to our fiasco in Iraq. I was against that from the start.

I just clicked on your links. There are still conspiracy theories about who shot JKF and even Abraham Lincoln too. Crackpot people will always see UFOs and little green men. It is hard to deny the images of the passenger planes flying into the trade center towers if you are at all grounded in reality. The destruction at the Pentagon and the hole in the ground and strewn airplane debris in Pennsylvania are real and documented too. We have numerous videos made by bin Laden that were published worldwide at his request in which he openly admitted he ordered the airplanes to be hijacked. When you hear hoofbeats why do you want to look for zebras unless you live in Aftica or a zoo?

Whoa, a Steven Gordon citing. Leave it to Stever to come out with his flag today. Tower 7, Dr. Handler. How did it fall? Answer that with physics-based facts. Just that one question.
Nothing more.

Please stop talking about green men. I don't lump you in with the guys from Nip/Tuck and castigate plastic surgeons for being slimy and immoral. That would be unreasonable. I'm sure you would agree that everyone in a society benefits when all sides are given a chance to be heard.

Tower 7, Doc, Tower 7.

If someone disagrees with what you were told, it is easier to dismiss them as a conspiracy "freak" or "wacko" than look seriously, with an open mind, into the statements that they're making.

Jefferson Jay
is disappointed that if you don't feel the same way everyone else does about stuff, that means you believe in green men. When did the second side of the story get banned? One Side! You disagree with what I heard on TV... Man, you must be crazy. I love everybody.
